Cornell College (IA) vs Northern Iowa prediction: Kyle Green's Northern Iowa debut starts with defense against Cornell College
The Panthers open the post-Jacobson era against Cornell College, and the real question is what Green's physical defensive identity looks like on night one.
- Northern Iowa has the clear data edge at the McLeod Center as Kyle Green coaches his first game in Cedar Falls.
- Watch UNI's defense: last season it ranked sixth of 365 in defensive efficiency, and Green wants even more physicality.
- Our feed holds no spread or total. Last season UNI played at 63.6 possessions per 40 minutes, 351st of 365.
A new coach, a familiar foundation
Northern Iowa begins a new era on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Kyle Green takes over following Ben Jacobson as the program's 26th head coach, and the Panthers arrive as reigning Missouri Valley Tournament champions after a 23-13 season that ended in the NCAA Tournament's first round.
The status of this game is unsettled. Cornell College lists it as an exhibition. UNI's schedule release, from September, billed Nov. 3 as the opener of its 126th regular season. Tip time is also unconfirmed.
The opponent is Cornell College of the Midwest Conference, not the Ivy League's Cornell. The teams' only meeting we found was an 88-66 UNI win on Nov. 20, 2019.
Defense first, now with contact
UNI's identity last season was defense. It allowed 61.8 points per game, the fewest in Division I, and finished sixth of 365 in defensive efficiency, a measure of points allowed per 100 possessions. Opponents made just 28.7% of their threes, third-best nationally.
Green wants to build on that, asking his team to defend with the physicality of a football team. The opener is the first look at whether that emphasis changes how the Panthers guard.
Slow, careful and short of extras
Last season's Panthers played at a crawl, 351st of 365 in pace. They also ranked 360th in both offensive rebound rate and free throw rate, meaning few second chances and few trips to the line. Tulsa transfer Ian Smikle, a junior forward, is one newcomer who could change that profile in the frontcourt.
Those are last season's numbers under a different coach, so treat them as a starting point rather than a forecast. In this opener, the more useful signals will be rotation choices and whether the defense looks as disciplined as before, with Kansas and Michigan State still ahead on the non-conference slate.
Numbers that matter
| Points allowed per game (2025-26) | 61.8 | Ranked first in Division I last season, the core of UNI's identity. |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive efficiency rank (2025-26) | 6th | Green inherits one of the country's best defenses from last season. |
| Pace rank (2025-26) | 351st | Last season's Panthers played among the slowest tempos nationally; a new coach may shift that. |
| Opponent 3-point % (2025-26) | 28.7% | Third-best in Division I last season at denying made threes. |
