Coppin St Eagles vs George Mason Patriots prediction: Coppin State's giveaways meet George Mason's rebuilt roster in Fairfax

Coppin State gave the ball away on a third of its possessions in its opener, so the real question tonight is whether George Mason's almost entirely new roster cashes in on those extra chances.

Quick take
  • Mason should control this from the start. The margin depends on how often Coppin wastes possessions before it even gets a shot off.
  • Watch Coppin's guards against Mason's interior defense, which held UMBC to 29.3% on two-pointers in the opener.
  • George Mason is now a 28.5-point favorite with a 140.5 total; the line has moved from 26.5 and the total from 142.5. Both teams went under in their openers.

Coppin's possession problem

Coppin State's season so far is one number: a 33.3% turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) in the 88-54 loss at Virginia Tech. That ranks 359th of 360. It isn't a one-night fluke. Last season's 22.3% rate ranked 361st of 365 during a 7-24 year.

The twist is that George Mason doesn't usually take the ball away. Mason's forced turnover rate was 242nd in its opener, and last season it ranked 263rd. So Coppin's problem is mostly self-inflicted. A cleaner night is possible against a defense that sits back.

The glass is less forgiving. Coppin grabbed only 53.1% of available defensive rebounds against the Hokies, 345th nationally. Mason rebounded 40.5% of its own misses against UMBC, 87th. Emmanuel Kanga pulled down 10 boards in 24 minutes as a starter. Every one of those second chances cuts into Coppin's hopes of keeping the margin inside the number.

Mason's transfer-built rotation

Last season's numbers say little about this George Mason team. Players on the roster accounted for only 15.0% of last season's minutes, and the stars of last year's 23-10 team have left. Kory Mincy went to South Carolina and Riley Allenspach to Cincinnati. Last season's adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) ranked 97th, but it describes a different group.

Tony Skinn, in his fourth season, rebuilt through the portal, and the opener showed the depth. Five Patriots scored in double figures. Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor led with 17 and used 35.5% of possessions while he was on the floor. Elijah Jones, a UTEP transfer who shot 38.6% from three last season, went 3-of-7. Freshman Shane Pendergrass added 11 points and 6 rebounds in his debut.

Baraka Okojie is the name to watch. He averaged 19.7 points at Mercer last season but shot 2-of-10 against UMBC, though he handed out 5 assists. Brayden O'Connor, who missed most of last season, returned with 11 points and tied his career high with eight rebounds. Mason was picked fourth in the A-10 preseason poll.

Where Coppin can score

Coppin barely shoots threes. Its 3-point attempt rate (share of shots from deep) was 23.1% at Virginia Tech, 355th, and it made only 16.7% of them. That pushes the offense toward the paint, which is exactly where Mason was stingiest. UMBC made just 29.3% of its two-pointers, 12th nationally.

Coppin does draw fouls, with a free throw rate of 46.2%, 88th. It then shot 58.3% at the line. Mason also kept UMBC off the stripe almost entirely, ranking 5th in opponent free throw rate.

Brendan Johnson, a junior guard on the MEAC preseason watch list, was the lone bright spot in Blacksburg with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Fifth-year forward Tafara Gapare, the Villanova transfer, is also on that watch list. Coppin was picked to finish tied for sixth in the MEAC. Its returners include Hussain Williams, who shot 26.3% from three last season.

What the market is saying

The line has moved from George Mason -26.5 to George Mason -28.5, and the total has dropped from 142.5 to 140.5, since our feed first recorded it. Both openers offer a guide. Mason covered as a 19.5-point favorite over UMBC. Coppin failed to cover as a 31.5-point underdog against a Virginia Tech team that finished last season ranked 55th in adjusted net efficiency.

Both of those games stayed under, and Coppin's 54 points in its opener is the main thing working against the total. The last meeting, in November 2024, ended George Mason 93, Coppin State 55 in Fairfax.

Tip is 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+ for Mason's Gold Rush Friday. Coppin comes in on three days' rest after a road trip to Blacksburg.
