Boston Univ. Terriers vs Brown Bears prediction: Boston University's trips to the line test Brown's foul-prone defense
Brown is favored at home tonight, but a whistle-heavy opener, sloppy ball handling and a rebuilt but aggressive Terriers backcourt make this number shakier than it looks.
| Spread | Brown -2 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 144.5 |
- Brown wants a grinding, low-possession game; a reshaped BU attacks the paint and the foul line, which could stretch the pace and the margin.
- BU's free throw rate (50.8%, 56th) against a Brown defense that ranked 356th of 360 in opponent free throw rate.
- Brown is favored by 2 with a 147.5 total; the line has moved from Brown -5.5 and a 158.5 total toward BU, and last season's adjusted net rated BU higher.
The foul line decides it
Eric Reveno's first season at Brown started with a 59-55 home loss to New Hampshire, and the Bears' defense looked good except when the whistle blew. Brown held the Wildcats to a 40.0% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times), 77th nationally. It also sent them to the line constantly: Brown's opponent free throw rate, free throw attempts per field goal attempt, sits at 71.1%, 356th of 360.
That is a dangerous habit against Boston University. The Terriers drew contact all night in their 93-85 opener over Northeastern, posting a free throw rate of 50.8% (56th). They made the most of it, too, at 76.7% from the stripe. Brown made 50.0% of its own free throws in the opener. One game is a thin sample for both teams, but if those habits hold, BU gets free points and Brown can't answer at the line.
Brown's ball security problem
The Bears' bigger issue was giving the ball away. Brown turned it over on 25.4% of its possessions, 336th in the country, and scored 55 points as an 8.5-point favorite against a New Hampshire team rated 344th by adjusted net efficiency. Brown led 27-20 at halftime and still lost.
BU's defense gives Brown a chance to clean that up. The Terriers rarely force mistakes: their forced turnover rate was 15.3% in the opener (276th), and last season it ranked 353rd of 365. Brown's backcourt of Jeremiah Jenkins and Brady Loughlin should get clean possessions. Whether it converts them is another matter. Brown's offensive efficiency, points per 100 possessions, was 87.3 in the opener, 308th.
A rebuilt Terriers attack
Joe Jones lost most of last season's production. BU returns only 41.6% of last season's minutes after Mike McNair Jr. left for Maryland, Chance Gladden for San Diego State and Ben Defty for Arizona State. Jones called replacing them "almost impossible." Tye Dorset is out with a torn ACL and could return in February or March.
That makes last season's numbers a weak guide, and the opener showed a different team. Last season's Terriers shot 39.3% from three (5th nationally). This group took threes on just 32.2% of its shots (312th) and went inside instead, making 65.0% of its twos. Brown's rim protection doesn't look ready for that: its block rate was 4.3% (314th).
The catalyst is Kyrone Alexander, the preseason all-Patriot League guard. He missed nearly all of last season after an injury in the opener and returned with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Azmar Abdullah added 21, and EJ Vernon scored 11 in 16 minutes off the bench. The weak spot is the other end: BU allowed 69.4% on twos, 348th, which gives N'famara Dabo room to work after his 9-rebound debut.
Why the market leans Brown
Brown is favored by 2 points, with a -137 moneyline, but the line has moved from Brown -5.5 to Brown -2 since our feed first saw the game, and the total has dropped from 158.5 to 147.5. The case for the Bears is mostly about home court and their roster: Brown opens the Reveno era with 12 players from last season's team. That continuity contrasts with BU's heavy turnover.
The ratings tell a different story. Last season's final adjusted net efficiency ranked BU 261st and Brown 289th. BU also won last season's meeting 90-77, though that game was in Boston.
The total of 147.5 points still sits well above anything Brown has produced, even after the drop from 158.5. The Bears played at 63 possessions per 40 minutes in the opener (346th) and went under a 144 total. BU ran at 72.5 possessions and cleared a 149 total. A parade of BU free throws stops the clock but adds points, so the foul count may matter as much as the tempo.

Numbers that matter
| Brown opponent free throw rate | 71.1% | Ranked 356th of 360 after the opener, a bad sign against a BU team that draws fouls. |
|---|---|---|
| BU free throw rate | 50.8% | 56th nationally, and the Terriers made 76.7% of their attempts. |
| Brown turnover rate | 25.4% | 336th, the main reason the Bears scored only 55 in a home loss. |
| BU returning minutes | 41.6% | Last season's numbers say little about a Terriers team that lost McNair, Gladden and Defty. |
| Spread | -5.5 | Brown favored at home and unmoved since first posted, despite last season's adjusted ratings ranking BU higher. |
