Blackburn vs Eastern Illinois prediction: Eastern Illinois finally comes home, with a roster Blackburn hasn't seen

After a three-game road stretch against Power Conference opponents, a nearly new Panthers team plays its first game at Groniger Arena against a non-Division I guest it has never lost to.

Quick take
  • Eastern Illinois should control a lopsided home opener, with the real interest in which newcomers settle into roles.
  • Watch Markus Blackwell's shooting: he made 43.6% of his threes last season and is one of only four returners.
  • No line is posted yet. The key number is 10.1%, the share of last season's minutes Eastern Illinois brings back.

A home opener after a gauntlet

Eastern Illinois spends the first stretch of 2026-27 on the road against Indiana, Iowa and Notre Dame. Blackburn, a non-Division I program, is the reward: the Panthers' first game at Groniger Arena, set for 7 p.m. local time on ESPN+.

The series has been one-way traffic. Eastern Illinois leads the all-time series 5-0 heading into this meeting, according to last January's series notes, including a 99-55 home win. No current injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either team.

Almost everyone is new

Marty Simmons, extended in April through 2028-29, rebuilt nearly from scratch. Eastern Illinois returns just four players from a team that went 13-20 last season, and those players logged only 10.1% of last season's minutes. The additions are five transfers from NAIA and Division II schools, two junior college players and four high school recruits.

That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide. The departures took real production: Zion Fruster scored 14.5 points per game, and Meechie White left for Indiana State. The headline newcomer is senior Jaden Miller, who spent three seasons at East Central University and joined Blackwell on the OVC preseason players-to-watch list.

What carried over, and what to watch

Last season's identity was defense. The Panthers forced turnovers on 19.9% of opponent possessions (46th of 365) and held opponents to 31.4% from three, while the offense ranked 349th in efficiency (points per 100 possessions). Whether a new group keeps that pressure is the open question.

  • Blackwell's role: a bench guard last season at 16.6 minutes a game, now a likely focal point.
  • JT Elder's health: injuries limited him to one game last season, against Kentucky.
  • Shane Sims: he missed all of last season; his first home minutes would be a clue to the rotation.

Key players

  • Markus Blackwell (Eastern Illinois): Made 17 of 39 threes last season, a 43.6% clip, without a single start.
  • JT Elder (Eastern Illinois): Scored 8 points in 17 minutes in his lone appearance last season.
  • Andrew Austin (Eastern Illinois): Shot 21.7% from three last season while playing 11.4 minutes a game.
