Austin Peay Governors vs Kennesaw St Owls prediction: Rashaud Marshall and Austin Peay's veterans test Kennesaw State's rebuilt Owls
Both teams return about three-tenths of last season's minutes, but Austin Peay's returning share includes the UAC's preseason player of the year, while Kennesaw State is leaning on transfers and freshmen.
| Spread | Kennesaw State -6 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 161.5 |
- Expect a quick, physical game in which Kennesaw State's new rotation has to handle Austin Peay's ball pressure for 40 minutes at home.
- Rashaud Marshall, who never attempted a three last season, works inside against an Owls front line built around shot-blocking.
- Kennesaw State is a 5.5-point favorite, down from 6 when our feed first saw it; last season's adjusted ratings rated these teams nearly even.
Continuity against a rebuild
Both openers were blowouts of non-Division I teams, so Friday's game in Kennesaw is the first real look at two heavily rebuilt rosters. Austin Peay brings back just 29.2% of last season's minutes. Kennesaw State brings back 30.8%. The difference is in who those minutes belong to.
The Governors kept their two most important pieces. Rashaud Marshall is the UAC's preseason player of the year after averaging 16.3 points last season. Zyree Collins, a preseason All-UAC pick, ran the offense with 4.3 assists per game. Corey Gipson, in his fourth season, filled in around them with seven freshmen who debuted against Lane and transfers like Shamarrie Hugie from Marshall. Austin Peay did lose Collin Parker, its leading scorer, and the guards who made most of its threes.
Kennesaw State's turnover is steeper at the top. RJ Johnson left for Mississippi State, Braedan Lue for Tennessee and Frankquon Sherman for High Point. The school says three starters return from last season's NCAA Tournament team, and Antoine Pettway's group was still picked second in Conference USA. Most of the production will come from newcomers, including Jacksonville State transfer Jacoby Hill and freshman Kyler Theophile, who led the opener with 18 points.
With this much roster churn, last season's numbers are a weak guide. For what they're worth, last season's adjusted net ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) put Kennesaw State 150th and Austin Peay 168th.
Marshall against the shot-blockers
Marshall scores almost entirely at the rim. He shot 65.6% last season and did not attempt a single three. He went 100% from the field in the opener.
That sends him straight into Kennesaw State's strength. The Owls blocked 13.7% of opponents' two-point attempts last season, which ranked 18th nationally. Returning forward Trey Simpson led Conference USA in blocks as a true freshman. Louisiana Tech transfer Avery Thomas II had three blocks against Midway.
If Kennesaw State's length keeps Marshall from scoring easily inside, Austin Peay has to find points elsewhere. Its new perimeter group hasn't shown it can do that yet: the Governors took just 28.2% of their shots from three in the opener, 334th in the country. The Owls went the other way and launched 54.9% of their shots from deep.
Pressure and the whistle
Gipson's teams take the ball away. Austin Peay ranked 14th nationally in steal rate last season, and the new roster had a steal rate of 21.0% against Lane. Hugie had four steals off the bench.
That pressure lands on a Kennesaw State backcourt still sorting itself out. Freshman Zyree Brown handed out seven assists in his debut, but he and Hill have never run this offense together against a Division I defense.
The other risk for the Owls is fouling. Last season Kennesaw State's opponents got to the line at a rate that ranked 355th of 365, near the bottom of the country. Collins went 100% from the line in the opener. If the Owls' aggressive defense turns into a parade to the line, Austin Peay can stay close even on nights when its jump shots don't fall.
Where the number sits
Kennesaw State opened at -6 in our feed and has drifted to -5.5, a small move toward Austin Peay. The total sits at 157.5, barely changed from 157.25.
That total is pricing in a fast game. Both teams played at top-20 paces in their openers. Austin Peay scored 62 first-half points and Kennesaw State scored 58, though both did it against non-Division I opponents. A better guide is last season's pace: Austin Peay ranked 48th and Kennesaw State 128th, both quicker than average but well short of breakneck.
The last meeting between these teams was Feb. 8, 2024, when Austin Peay won 85-69 at home. Both rosters have turned over almost completely since then.
What to watch
- How many of Marshall's touches end at the rim instead of getting blocked or kicked back out.
- Kennesaw State's turnovers in the first 10 minutes against Austin Peay's pressure.
- Whether the Owls keep shooting more than half their shots from three against a Division I defense.
