Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs UCLA prediction: Arkansas-Pine Bluff brings a near-total rebuild into Pauley Pavilion

The Golden Lions return almost none of last season's minutes, and a retooled, ranked UCLA gets the first look at who they've become.

Quick take
  • UCLA should control the tempo and the ball, turning a rebuilt UAPB rotation's mistakes into a comfortable home win.
  • UCLA's shooters, led by Trent Perry and Texas Tech transfer Jaylen Petty, against a UAPB defense that ranked 252nd in opponent effective FG% last season.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. When the total lands, watch the pace gap: UAPB ranked 20th in tempo last season, UCLA 310th.

A roster built from scratch

Most preseason previews ask what a team lost. For Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the better question is what's left. The Golden Lions return just 2.7% of last season's minutes, which means the 13-19 team from 2025-26 is mostly a name on a jersey.

The biggest hole belongs to Quion Williams, who averaged 17.7 points last season. Trevon Payton left for Bradley and Milhan Charles for Florida Atlantic. The top returner, guard Jai'chaunn Hayes, played 10 games. Solomon Bozeman is rebuilding around transfers like Jalen Tatum from Jackson State and David Giddens from Cleveland State, and the class-year listings for the rest of the roster don't even agree between sources.

That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide here. UAPB's schedule has road games at Arkansas and Baylor before it reaches Los Angeles, so this is the third straight high-major stop.

UCLA reloads instead

UCLA turned over plenty too, just with a much higher floor. The Bruins bring back 47.6% of last season's minutes, including starters Trent Perry, Eric Dailey Jr. and Xavier Booker. They open at No. 22 in the preseason AP poll and were picked fifth in the Big Ten.

The departures are real. Tyler Bilodeau scored 17.6 points a game, and point guard Donovan Dent left for LSU after averaging 7.5 assists. Mick Cronin filled the gaps with Jaylen Petty from Texas Tech, Filip Jović from Auburn and Sergej Macura from Mississippi State, plus Serbian freshman Nikola Kusturica. Petty is the headliner: he made 69 threes last season. Jović, a low-usage big, shot 64% from the floor at Auburn.

Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had UCLA 31st in net efficiency and UAPB 320th of 365. Both rosters have changed, but nothing about the turnover narrows that gap.

Whose speed wins out

This is the clearest style clash in the game. UAPB played fast last season, ranking 20th nationally at 71.8 possessions per 40 minutes. UCLA ranked 310th at 64.9, a Cronin team that grinds possessions down.

The home team usually sets the terms in a game like this, and UCLA's ball security makes that easy. The Bruins' turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) ranked 11th in the country last season. UAPB's ranked 300th. A new, inexperienced backcourt is unlikely to fix that by mid-November, and live-ball turnovers are the one way a faster underdog gets the extra possessions it would need.

Threes, fouls and the glass

UCLA shot 37.9% from three last season, 20th nationally, and Booker hit 43.3% of his attempts as a stretch forward. Effective field goal percentage counts threes as worth 1.5 twos, and UAPB's defense ranked 252nd at limiting it.

The Golden Lions also fouled a lot. Their opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked 338th, a problem against a UCLA team that ranked 45th in free throw percentage. Perry, an 85.8% shooter last season, is the Bruin most likely to collect those points.

The one area where UAPB isn't badly outmatched is rebounding, and only because neither team was good at it. UCLA ranked 317th in defensive rebound percentage last season, UAPB 302nd. Neither team's defensive rebounding was strong last season, so second chances could matter once the game is played.

Key players

  • Trent Perry (UCLA): Averaged 12.6 points last season and shot 39.2% from three with an offensive rating of 124.
  • Eric Dailey Jr. (UCLA): Started all 35 games last season, averaging 11.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.
  • Xavier Booker (UCLA): Shot 43.3% from three and blocked 1.2 shots a game last season.
  • Jaylen Petty (UCLA): Made 69 threes at a 37.5% clip for Texas Tech last season.
  • Jai'chaunn Hayes (Arkansas-Pine Bluff): Averaged 6.1 points in 17.4 minutes over 10 games last season.
  • Jalen Tatum (Arkansas-Pine Bluff): Started six games at Jackson State last season, averaging 7.7 points.
  • David Giddens (Arkansas-Pine Bluff): Scored 3.8 points a game off the bench at Cleveland State last season.
