Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs Arkansas prediction: Calipari's rebuilt Arkansas debuts against UAPB with almost nothing returning

The Razorbacks open with six five-star freshmen and two transfers, so last season's sharp offense tells you less about this group than its new faces do.

Quick take
  • Arkansas should control a fast game, but expect choppy stretches from a new roster playing its first game together.
  • Jeremiah Wilkinson's shot creation against a UAPB defense that sent opponents to the line constantly last season.
  • No spread or total yet. Last season's final adjusted net ratings ranked Arkansas 19th and UAPB 320th of 365.

A roster built from scratch

Arkansas finished last season 28-9 as the SEC champion. Its run ended in the Sweet 16, where Arizona won 109-88. Almost none of that team will be on the floor Nov. 3. Players on this season's roster accounted for just 15.7% of last season's minutes, and Billy Richmond III is the lone real contributor back.

The exits are steep. Darius Acuff Jr. averaged 23.5 points and ran the offense. Meleek Thomas, Trevon Brazile and DJ Wagner, now at Maryland, are gone too.

That changes how to read last season's numbers. Adjusted efficiency measures points per 100 possessions, adjusted for the opponents faced. Arkansas posted an adjusted offensive rating of 128.7 last season, 6th in the country. That was Acuff's offense, so treat it as a picture of the program's ceiling rather than of this roster.

John Calipari, in his third season in Fayetteville, rebuilt the way he usually does: a haul of six five-star freshmen plus two productive transfers. Voters bought in, putting the Razorbacks at No. 12 in the AP preseason poll.

Who carries the new Razorbacks

Jeremiah Wilkinson arrives from Georgia as the likeliest go-to scorer. He averaged 17.4 points there last season. His usage rate, the share of possessions he finished while on the floor, was 30.5%.

Cooper Bowser gives Calipari a finisher inside. He made 76.6% of his shots at Furman last season and almost never shot from outside. An Arkansas injury report in late September referenced Bowser, but neither the injury nor his status has been made clear.

Richmond, the bridge from last season, averaged 11.2 points. The freshmen are the story, though. Jordan Smith Jr. made the preseason All-SEC second team. Miikka Muurinen was cleared by the NCAA, played in the early October scrimmages and is expected to start. Abdou Toure is part of the class as well. Guard Isaiah Sealy had offseason knee surgery, and there has been no recent word on his status.

Pace and a busy whistle

Both programs played fast last season. Arkansas ranked 17th nationally in pace and UAPB ranked 20th. More possessions tend to widen the gap between a deep, talented roster and an overmatched one.

The Golden Lions' defense also fouled a lot. Free throw rate measures free throw attempts per field goal attempt, and UAPB's opponents posted a 42.4% rate, 338th in Division I. Against an Arkansas team built around athletic freshmen attacking the rim, that invites a parade to the line.

Ball security was a problem too. UAPB turned it over on 18.7% of its possessions, 300th nationally. Arkansas had the nation's lowest turnover rate last season, but much of that backcourt has departed. Both rosters turned over, so these are habits of the programs, not proven traits of these players.

UAPB starts over as well

UAPB went 13-19 last season and lost to Southern in the SWAC tournament. Only three players return: Jai'Chaunn Hayes, Harrison Pickett and Jahmari Hamilton-Brown. The headliner is Jalen Tatum, a Pine Bluff native who came over from Jackson State and made the All-SWAC preseason second team. SWAC coaches and sports information directors still picked the Golden Lions 11th.

Solomon Bozeman coaches a team whose final adjusted net rating last season was -16, 320th in the country. This is the first meeting between the programs in Arkansas men's history, though UAPB's women have already won in Fayetteville.

Arkansas lists a 7 p.m. tip on SEC Network+, while other listings still show the time as TBD. No spread or total has been posted yet.
