Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions vs Baylor Bears prediction: UAPB's turnover problem hands Baylor a 36.5-point runway

Quick take
  • Baylor should control this from the opening minutes; the question is margin, which turns on UAPB's ball security and Baylor's shaky free-throw shooting.
  • Baylor's guards, led by Dylan Mingo's four-steal debut, against a UAPB backcourt that turned it over at a rate ranked 357th of 360.
  • Baylor is a 36.5-point favorite with a 158.5 total, both unchanged since first seen; Baylor failed to cover -32 in its opener.

A ball-security crisis in Pine Bluff

Arkansas-Pine Bluff's opener at Arkansas was a 106-61 loss, and the giveaways told the story. The Golden Lions turned it over on 31.2% of their possessions, a turnover rate that ranks 357th of 360 Division I teams. That is the number most likely to decide how far this one gets away.

Baylor is built to punish it. The Bears forced turnovers on 21.1% of Northwestern State's possessions in their opener, and freshman Dylan Mingo collected four steals in 23 minutes. Every live-ball miscue becomes a run-out against a UAPB defense that gave up a 59.4% effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) at Arkansas.

Don't lean on last season's UAPB numbers to argue for a bounce-back. Players on this roster account for just 2.7% of last season's minutes, so the 2025-26 team is a different group entirely. One game is all anyone has seen of this one.

Second chances and free throws

UAPB rebounded only 51.4% of Arkansas' misses, a defensive rebound rate that ranks 350th. Baylor grabbed 39.5% of its own misses against Northwestern State, and Scott Drew spent his pregame press conference on center rotation and frontcourt depth, with Caden Powell part of a center-by-committee. Last season Powell made 67.2% of his shots in a low-usage role (12.4% usage).

The foul line cuts both ways. UAPB sent Arkansas to the line constantly, with an opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 65.6%, 348th nationally. Baylor drew free throws at a 44.6% rate in its opener, but made only 55.2% of them, 328th. A team laying 36.5 points can't leave many at the stripe, and that is the cleanest path for UAPB to stay inside the number.

Two rosters starting over

Baylor went 17-17 last season and missed the NCAA Tournament, then was picked 10th of 16 in the Big 12 preseason coaches' poll. Drew rebuilt around transfers, and Jerome Tang returned as associate head coach after four seasons running Kansas State.

The headliner is Brett Decker Jr., who shot 47.1% on 242 threes at Liberty last season. He opened with 17 points on 5-of-9 from deep. Kayden Mingo, from Penn State, matched him with 17 and seven rebounds. Juslin Bodo Bodo, who missed all of last season with an arm injury, is cleared; Baylor's Nov. 5 release listed him among 10 players making their Baylor debuts, though no starting five has been named.

UAPB lost last season's leading scorer, Quion Williams, who averaged 17.7 points. Jackson State transfer Jalen Tatum carried the load at Arkansas with 16 points, though he needed 11 shots to get there. Creed Williamson was the efficient one, scoring 13 on 5-of-6 shooting.

Reading a massive number

The spread has sat at Baylor -36.5 since our feed first saw it, with the total at 158.5. Both teams are 0-1 against the spread. Baylor beat Northwestern State 87-65 but failed to cover -32 after leading 50-32 at the half, so the margin shrank in the second half. UAPB failed to cover +41.75 at Arkansas, though that total of 167 landed exactly.

Schedule context matters here. Arkansas ranked 19th in adjusted net efficiency last season; Northwestern State ranked 283rd. Baylor sits between them, finishing 46th last season against UAPB's 320th. Both teams played fast in their openers, with UAPB at 77.5 possessions per 40 minutes and Baylor at 76.5, which supports a high total. The last two meetings, in 2020 and 2021, ended 99-42 and 99-54.

What to watch

  • UAPB's first 10 possessions: if the giveaways from Arkansas carry over, the rout starts early.
  • Baylor at the line: a repeat of its opener's free-throw shooting keeps the margin in check.
  • Bodo Bodo's debut minutes: a new frontcourt body against a team that struggled to finish defensive possessions.
