American Eagles vs Clemson Tigers prediction: Clemson's transfer rebuild faces American's returning core at Littlejohn
Clemson brought back barely a quarter of last season's minutes, while American's Patriot League favorites return nearly everyone, and both looked very different from their 2025-26 selves in their openers.
| Spread | Clemson -15.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 141.5 |
- Clemson's transfers should control the paint and the free-throw line, while American has to stop the giveaways that sank it at Cincinnati.
- Madden Collins, who carried a 41.4% usage rate in the opener, against a Clemson backcourt led by Ace Buckner.
- Clemson is favored by 15.5 with a 141.5 total. The line has moved from 18.5 to 15.5 since our feed first saw it, while the total is unchanged. Clemson failed to cover -22.5 against Stetson.
A new Clemson, an old American
Tonight's game pairs two programs built in opposite ways. Clemson returns just 28.4% of last season's minutes. The Tigers rebuilt with four transfers: Cole Certa from Notre Dame, Liutauras Lelevicius from TCU, David Fuchs from San Francisco and Dylan Faulkner from Samford. All four scored in double figures in the 85-72 opener against Stetson, and Ace Buckner added a career-high 20.
American went the other way. The Eagles are the Patriot League's preseason favorite and return nearly their entire roster from a 16-16 team. That continuity makes last season's profile a fair guide for them, more so than for Clemson. It also makes their opener harder to explain. American lost 79-53 at Cincinnati, a team ranked 48th in opponent-adjusted net rating, and its effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) was 34.3%, 350th in the country.
Giveaways decide the margin
American's worst problem in the opener was ball security. The Eagles turned it over on 25.0% of possessions, 330th nationally. Last season the same core sat at 15.7%, so a correction toward that baseline seems more likely than a repeat.
Clemson may help with that correction. The Tigers forced turnovers on just 14.1% of Stetson's possessions, 314th, so they won't take the ball away often. On the other end, Clemson's 12.3% turnover rate ranked 43rd. If American can't make Clemson give the ball up, its path to covering runs through shooting alone.
A lot of threes, not many makes
American shoots threes as much as almost anyone. In the opener, 53.7% of its shots came from deep, 25th nationally, and it made just 24.1% of them. Inside the arc it was worse, hitting 32.0% of its twos.
Clemson's interior defense is the soft spot to watch. Stetson made 63.9% of its twos, 329th, and outscored the Tigers after halftime: Clemson led 49-24 at the break before the 85-72 final. Julen Iturbe, a Greenville, S.C., native returning home, moves back to power forward after playing center last season, when he averaged 10.5 points. Eric Michaels, playing again after missing his sophomore season injured, adds size alongside him.
Clemson lives at the line
Faulkner set the tone against Stetson with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting. Clemson's free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) was 71.4%, fifth in Division I, a big jump from last season's team.
Clemson also plays slowly. Its pace of 64.5 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 337th, close to last season's style. Fewer possessions shrink the number of chances a 15.5-point favorite gets to pull away, which matters for both the spread and a total of 141.5. The line has moved from 18.5 to 15.5.
Who is available
Dillon Hunter remained ineligible as of Nov. 3 after being left out of a Texas judge's temporary relief order, and he missed the Stetson game. Carter Welling, Clemson's only returning starter, was still rehabbing a torn ACL in mid-October and was expected to miss the start of the season. Zac Foster re-tore his ACL and was announced out indefinitely on Oct. 13.
An undated team page lists Faulkner and Buckner as limited in practice with undisclosed injuries. Both played in the opener, so their status is unsettled rather than doubtful. Nothing has been reported on American injuries.
What to watch
- American's turnover rate in the first 10 minutes, the clearest sign of whether the opener was a fluke.
- Whether Clemson's second-half defense against Stetson repeats.
- Clemson's free-throw attempts with Faulkner working inside.
- Collins' shot volume against Clemson's guards.
