Philadelphia 76ers vs Detroit Pistons prediction: Embiid's return gives the Sixers a real look at Detroit's wall
The East's two stingiest defenses meet again after Detroit's Oct. 25 win in Philadelphia, this time with Embiid back on limited minutes and Duren still sidelined.
| Spread | Detroit Pistons -2 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 217.5 |
- Expect a grinding, half-court game: Detroit ranks 27th in pace, and these are the league's top two defenses by efficiency allowed.
- Detroit's ball pressure, 2nd in forced turnover rate, against a Sixers offense that leads the league in protecting the ball.
- Detroit -2 moved from -1.5, and the total slipped to 217.5 from 218.5; Philadelphia's games have gone under six of eight times.
Two defenses, one slow rhythm
Two of the East's best starts collide in Detroit, and both were built on the same foundation. The Pistons allow 99.6 points per 100 possessions, best in the league, and the Sixers sit right behind them at 102.4, 2nd of 30. Neither offense ranks in the top ten in efficiency.
Tempo tilts toward a grind. Detroit plays at the 27th-ranked pace in the league, 4th-slowest, and the Pistons have shown little interest in trading baskets. Philadelphia arrives 7-1, Detroit 6-1, and both teams had Tuesday off for Election Day, so neither is on a back-to-back.
Embiid back, but not all the way
The first meeting tells only part of the story. Detroit won 106-93 in Philadelphia on Oct. 25, but the Sixers played that night without Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe. Both are available now, and LeBron James is off the injury report after sitting out Saturday's win over Charlotte to manage sciatica.
Embiid is the swing piece, and he is not yet himself. He is averaging 18.5 points on 40.7% shooting through six games and is managing plantar fascia trouble in his right foot. "Just got to manage it and when it flares up pretty bad, got to take a step back," Embiid said. He played under a restriction Monday, logged just under 25 minutes and sat the entire fourth quarter; expect a similar limit tonight.
That leaves the heavy lifting to Tyrese Maxey, who is scoring 29.1 points a night. His drives run into the league's best shot-blocking team: Detroit blocks 14.3% of opponents' two-point attempts, 1st in the NBA. If Embiid can't punish that length in the post, Maxey will see a crowded paint.
The turnover battle
This is where the game may be won. Philadelphia owns the league's lowest turnover rate, coughing it up on 12.5% of possessions, 1st of 30. Detroit forces turnovers on 18.6% of opponent possessions, 2nd in the league, and turns them into transition chances.
The Sixers need that ball security, because they don't get many second looks. They grab just 21.2% of their own misses, 29th in the league. A team that rarely extends possessions cannot afford to give them away, and Detroit's hands in the passing lanes are built to test exactly that.
Detroit without its big man
Jalen Duren remains out with a right hamstring strain he suffered Oct. 23, and Isaiah Joe is out with a right hip bruise. Duren averaged 19.5 points last season, and his absence has pushed more minutes to Reed, who has been starting at center, along with John Collins and Tolu Smith. Ugonna Onyenso is also listed out, with Elijah Harkless and Isaac Jones questionable.
The Pistons have leaned on shooting instead. They hit 38.1% from three, 6th in the league, with newcomer Collins stretching the floor from the frontcourt. That runs straight into a Sixers defense that holds opponents to the 6th-lowest three-point percentage.
Cade Cunningham sets the tone either way. He scored a season-high 33 in Monday's rout at Charlotte, including a third-quarter burst that fueled a 19-0 run.
Where the market sits
Detroit is a 2-point favorite after our feed first saw it at -1.5, and the total has dipped to 217.5 from 218.5. The modest move toward the Pistons fits their form: they are 6-1 against the spread and have won every meeting with Philadelphia over the last two seasons.
The total reflects two defenses in control. Sixers games have stayed under six of eight times, and Detroit's first-half defense ranks 2nd in points allowed. The open question is how much a capped Embiid changes the math the market already priced in.
