Oklahoma City Thunder vs Memphis Grizzlies prediction: Gilgeous-Alexander carries a gutted Thunder into Memphis's three-point storm

Oklahoma City is missing its three best-known core players and still favored, betting that one superstar and a paint wall can outlast the league's best shooting team.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 6, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • OKC has to grind it out: Gilgeous-Alexander scores in volume while the Thunder dare Memphis to beat them from deep.
  • Memphis's shooters against an OKC defense that allows opponents to take 47.3% of their shots from three, 3rd-highest share in the league.
  • Thunder -3.5, total 225.5, both unchanged since our feed first saw them; OKC games have gone under in 6 of 8.

One star, a thin roster

The Thunder arrive without Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace, and the market still makes them the road favorite. That is a bet on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 42 against Cleveland on Wednesday for his second straight 40-point night. The Grizzlies, 6-2 like their guests but losers of two straight, open NBA Cup group play tonight with a chance to dent a series Oklahoma City has owned.

The absences are long-term. Jalen Williams had surgery on a fractured left fibula and Wallace on a torn left labrum, and both will be re-evaluated before the end of the regular season. Holmgren had a biological treatment for a small patellar tendon tear and will miss at least 8-10 weeks. Jaylin Williams (back spasms) is out for a second straight game. Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topić are listed out on most Friday reports, though one lists them day-to-day, so their status is unsettled. Mark Daigneault said his team is "not looking for sympathy."

What's left leans hard on one man. Gilgeous-Alexander averages 30.1 points and Ajay Mitchell adds 17.8, but Jared McCain is shooting 33.7% from the field. The offense scores 108.4 points per 100 possessions, 19th in the league, and ranks dead last in assist rate. This is isolation basketball because it has to be.

Memphis is short too. Isaiah Stewart (right knee bruise) and Scotty Pippen Jr. (lumbar disc herniation, to be reevaluated in three weeks) are both out. Cam Spencer and Kris Murray are in line for bigger roles. Quinten Post returned from an ankle sprain this week, with no Friday update since.

OKC walls off the paint, Memphis fires away

The Thunder defense still does one thing as well as anyone: it protects the basket. Opponents score 37.5 points in the paint per game against OKC, fewest in the league, and Aday Mara blocks 1.9 shots in under 20 minutes.

The cost is the perimeter. Opponents take 47.3% of their shots from three against the Thunder, 3rd-highest share in the league, and hit 36.0%, which ranks 19th. That is the exact door Memphis likes to walk through. The Grizzlies make 40.1% of their threes, best in the NBA.

Ty Jerome drives it, averaging 27.4 points with an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 57.1%. Cedric Coward is hitting 50.0% from deep. Rookie Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 pick, has been more grinder than shotmaker, shooting 37.3% but grabbing 9.8 rebounds a night. If Memphis's shooters stay hot, OKC's interior strength barely matters.

Who gives the ball away

The two-game skid has a clear cause. Memphis turns it over on 15.8% of its possessions, 21st in the league, and Tuomas Iisalo said this week that the passes are late and his team does not handle ball pressure well. The Thunder are the opposite: their 13.1% turnover rate ranks 3rd.

OKC doesn't force many turnovers, so the risk is mostly Memphis beating itself. When the Grizzlies do hold onto the ball, they run, averaging 18.2 fast-break points, 4th in the league. A clean night from Memphis's guards turns this into a track meet the Thunder are poorly built for.

A line that hasn't blinked

Oklahoma City is a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 225.5, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded them. The Grizzlies are +130 on the moneyline.

History supports the favorite. OKC won all three regular-season meetings last season, the last a 117-116 escape in Memphis, and swept the Grizzlies in the 2025 playoffs. The Thunder's grind-it-out style also shows in the totals: their games have gone under in 6 of 8, and they allow just 51.2 first-half points, 3rd-fewest. Memphis has been the better bet against the number, though, covering in 6 of 8.
