Toronto Raptors vs Milwaukee Bucks prediction: Toronto's turnover machine hunts a Bucks team still searching for footing
The Raptors force more turnovers than anyone in the league, and a 1-7 Milwaukee team has few ways to protect the ball or the glass, so Scottie Barnes's groin may decide how big the gap gets.
| Spread | Toronto Raptors -4.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 229 |
- Toronto should build its margin on extra possessions from steals, runouts and second chances, while Milwaukee leans on Herro's threes to keep pace.
- Scottie Barnes, questionable with groin soreness, is Toronto's top scorer and its best ball thief against a shaky Bucks backcourt.
- Toronto is favored by 4.5, down from 7.5 when our feed first saw it; Milwaukee's first-half scoring ranks 30th.
The possession gap
This NBA Cup group game turns on a simple question: how many extra shots does Toronto get? The Raptors lead the league in forced turnover rate, taking the ball away on 19.2% of opponent possessions. Their steal rate ranks 2nd. Milwaukee's ball security is middling at best, with a turnover rate that ranks 19th.
The other side of that ledger is worse for the Bucks. They rank 30th in forcing turnovers, so Toronto's own tidy offense, 5th in turnover rate, should rarely give anything back. Then there is the glass. The Raptors grab 31.8% of their own misses, 2nd in the NBA, against a Bucks defense that ranks 23rd in defensive rebound rate.
Those stolen possessions turn into points quickly. Toronto scores 18.6 fast-break points a game, 2nd in the league, and 51.5 in the paint, 4th. Milwaukee has to win this game in the half court, and it hasn't done that well.
Barnes on the injury report
Barnes is listed as questionable with left groin soreness. He still played 32 minutes in Wednesday's loss at Denver, and the most recent reports had him trending toward playing. Nothing has surfaced about a minutes limit. He has carried this team with 23.5 points and 2.2 steals a game, the engine of that turnover-forcing defense.
Toronto is already without Kawhi Leonard, who is out with left knee inflammation and due for re-evaluation about a week after the Raptors' Nov. 3 update. Toronto is 2-4 since Leonard went down. Nate Bittle's status is unsettled, with Friday reports split between out and day-to-day for his foot. Jakob Poeltl returned Wednesday from a shoulder issue.
If Barnes sits, Collin Murray-Boyles, Allen Graves and Jamison Battle are in line for more minutes. Murray-Boyles has given the Raptors 9.6 points a night off the bench. Kevin McCullar Jr., signed to a two-way deal Thursday, could debut.
Milwaukee's lone path: the arc
The Bucks shoot threes about as often as anyone, ranking 5th in 3-point attempt rate. That fits the matchup, because Toronto's defense ranks 25th in opponent 3-point percentage. Tyler Herro has been the one reliable source of offense, averaging 22.2 points while hitting 42.6% from deep. Jaime Jaquez Jr. has made 15 of his 31 threes.
The trouble is the start. Milwaukee scores 49.6 first-half points per game, dead last in the league, and has trailed by double digits at halftime in four of its last five games. Toronto's own shooting gives the Bucks a sliver of hope: the Raptors rank 25th in 3-point percentage, and Barnes has made just 4 of 26 attempts.
A skid and a series
Milwaukee is 1-7 under coach Taylor Jenkins after four straight losses, its worst eight-game opening since 1993-94. There were signs of life Wednesday in Boston: the Bucks briefly led in the fourth quarter before losing 109-102, covering as 12.5-point underdogs.
Toronto has won the last three meetings, including a 122-94 rout in Milwaukee last February. The Raptors also need this one in Cup play after dropping their group opener to Orlando 121-114.
Where the market sits
Toronto is a 4.5-point road favorite at -184 on the moneyline, and the line has moved from 7.5 to 4.5 toward Milwaukee since our feed first saw it. The total sits at 229 after moving down from 231.5.
Every one of Toronto's last five games has gone over, while three of Milwaukee's last five stayed under. One wrinkle for the total: Toronto ranks 30th in opponent free throw rate, but Milwaukee ranks 28th at getting to the line, so it may not exploit that weakness.
