Philadelphia 76ers vs Cleveland Cavaliers prediction: LeBron returns to Cleveland as the Cavaliers' frontcourt wobbles

The Sixers bring an elite defense and a five-game win streak into an NBA Cup game against a Cleveland team that may be missing its starting center.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 6, 6:00 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Philadelphia's defense should slow a shorthanded Cleveland offense. The Cavaliers need Mitchell and Mobley to win the shooting battle by a wide margin.
  • Evan Mobley against the Sixers' interior, especially if Jarrett Allen's knee keeps him out and Mobley has to play center full time.
  • Philadelphia is favored by 2.5 on the road. Sixers games have gone under the total seven times in nine tries.

A homecoming with stakes

LeBron James signed with Philadelphia as a free agent in late July. He chose the Sixers over Cleveland and Miami, and Friday is his first trip back to the building this season. The Cavaliers are celebrating the anniversary of their 2016 title on Saturday, a night after he leaves town.

The game counts for more than nostalgia. It is NBA Cup group play in East Group B, where only the group winner is guaranteed a quarterfinal spot. Philadelphia already won its first group game, and Cleveland opens group play here.

The Sixers arrive 8-1 with five straight wins, the last a 112-106 win at Detroit on Wednesday. Cleveland is 4-4 and coming off a 124-116 loss to Oklahoma City, its second loss to the Thunder in three days. This is also the second meeting in about two weeks. Philadelphia won 114-106 on Oct. 22 after Cleveland won every meeting last season.

Cleveland's center question

Jarrett Allen left Wednesday's game early in the first quarter after a knee-to-knee collision and did not return. He is questionable. Kenny Atkinson said it was too early to know his status, while Allen said he was "alright." No update newer than Thursday's tag had surfaced by Friday.

Allen matters. He scores 13.2 points a game on 62.1% shooting. Without him, Mobley, Thomas Bryant and Mario Hezonja split the center minutes. Mobley has been Cleveland's best player so far, averaging 18.8 points and hitting 48.6% of his threes. The trouble is depth. Peyton Watson (hamstring) and Tyrese Proctor (ankle) are questionable, while Jaylon Tyson and Nae'Qwan Tomlin are out.

Philadelphia is thin up front too. Adem Bona is doubtful after leaving the Detroit game, and Jabari Walker is next in line behind Joel Embiid. Embiid, who is managing a plantar fascia issue in his right foot, was not on Thursday's report. He has struggled to score efficiently, shooting 41.3% from the field. Cleveland's interior defense has been soft, allowing 51.0 paint points a game (24th of 30).

Threes against a stingy defense

Cleveland's offense runs on volume from deep. Threes make up 46.1% of its shots, 9th-most in the league. Donovan Mitchell leads the attack with 22.5 points a game and 41.1% shooting from three.

That runs straight into the league's second-best defense. Philadelphia allows 102.6 points per 100 possessions, and opponents are hitting 31.8% of their threes against it (9th). The Sixers' offense is the weaker unit, ranking 20th in efficiency. They win because Tyrese Maxey (28.0 points a game) and Jaylen Brown carry the scoring while the defense holds. Maxey had a hand scare late Wednesday but said he would "be fine."

James Harden is the swing piece for Cleveland. He is shooting 37.9% from the field, and the Cavaliers need more from him against a defense this good.

The possession math

Philadelphia rarely gives the ball away. Its turnover rate, turnovers per 100 possessions, is 12.7%, 2nd-best in the league. Cleveland does little to change that, ranking 29th in forced turnover rate. The Cavaliers will probably have to win this game on shotmaking, not extra possessions.

The Sixers do concede one edge. They grab only 21.0% of their own misses, 29th in the league, so Cleveland should rarely face second chances even without Allen.

Where the market sits

Philadelphia is a 2.5-point favorite, and the line has drifted toward the Sixers since our feed first saw it at Cleveland +2.25. The Sixers are 6-3 against the spread. Cleveland is 2-6.

The total opened in our feed at 229.75 and has dropped to 228.5. Pace is the tension. Cleveland plays fast (5th in pace), while Philadelphia sits near the middle and leans on its defense. Seven of the Sixers' nine games have gone under, and a short-handed Cavaliers rotation does little to change that.
