Washington Wizards vs Atlanta Hawks prediction: Anthony Davis's ankle and Atlanta's soft paint frame Trae Young's homecoming
Washington's best path runs straight at a short-handed Hawks frontcourt, provided its star big man can play on a sprained right ankle.
| Spread | Atlanta Hawks -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 228 |
- Atlanta pushes the pace and hunts steals; Washington wins only if it pounds the paint and gets to the free throw line.
- Anthony Davis, questionable with a sprained ankle, against a Hawks defense allowing 54.7 paint points per game, 29th in the league.
- Hawks -8.5 with a 228.0 total; the line has moved from Hawks -6.5 and 228.5 since Friday morning; Washington is 7-1 to the under this season.
Davis, the ankle and the paint
Two nights after Atlanta won 120-105 in Washington, the rematch moves to State Farm Arena with NBA Cup group stakes and Trae Young back in the building he used to own. The question that decides it is simpler than the storyline: can the Wizards get to the rim, and who will be there to stop them?
Washington scores 52.5 points in the paint per game, 3rd in the league. Atlanta defends the area worse than almost anyone, allowing 54.7 paint points per game (29th) while opponents make 59.4% of their twos (28th). The Hawks are also thin up front. Jock Landale (hip) and Asa Newell (toe) are out, Mouhamed Gueye is recovering from a foot fracture and Henri Veesaar is lost for the season with a torn ACL. That leaves Onyeka Okongwu, at 8.4 rebounds per game, to carry the middle.
The Wizards' answer is Anthony Davis, who leads them at 23.4 points per game. He sprained his right ankle Wednesday, stayed in and still finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds. He is listed as questionable, and the Wizards had not ruled him in or out. Alex Sarr's status is murky too: reports conflicted on whether a knee issue sidelined him Wednesday, and nothing new has surfaced since.
Threes the Wizards can't make
Washington has to win inside because it can't shoot from outside. The Wizards make 29.4% of their threes, 29th in the league, and Young has hit just 15 of 54. Atlanta rarely gives up good looks anyway, holding opponents to 30.2% from deep, 3rd-best. Bub Carrington, at 12 of 27 off the bench, is the rare Wizard with a hot hand.
The Hawks have the shooter in this matchup. Nickeil Alexander-Walker averages 21.7 points on 40.7% from three across 91 attempts, and he scored 26 on Wednesday. Washington's perimeter defense is stingy too, allowing 30.1% from deep (2nd), so his shotmaking against that coverage is the swing on Atlanta's side.
Steals, boards and the line
Atlanta forces turnovers on 17.6% of opponent possessions, 6th in the league, and Dyson Daniels averages 2.7 steals. Washington takes care of the ball, though, giving it away on 14.4% of possessions (8th-best). Live-ball mistakes would feed a Hawks team that plays at the league's 6th-fastest pace while the Wizards rank 23rd.
The glass favors Atlanta. Washington ranks last in offensive rebound rate (the share of its own misses it recovers) and 26th on the defensive boards. The free throw line favors Washington. The Wizards draw free throws at the 7th-highest rate, and Atlanta fouls freely, ranking 23rd in opponent free throw rate. The Hawks get to the line least often of any team, and Washington sends opponents there less than anyone.
Homecoming and a tired turnaround
The Wizards acquired Young from Atlanta on Jan. 9, 2026, sending back CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Young averages 9.5 assists for Washington but has shot 40.6% from the field.
Atlanta's own star forward is uncertain. Jalen Johnson, who averages 18.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists, has missed two straight games with a left ankle sprain and is questionable again. Lu Dort projects to start if he sits. Rookie Kingston Flemings, the No. 8 pick, moved into the starting lineup Wednesday, with McCollum shifting to the bench.
Washington also has the next night to think about, with a road game at Oklahoma City on Saturday. The Hawks have been better away from home this season, 4-2 on the road against 1-2 at home, but they beat the Wizards by scores of 119-98 and 126-96 in last season's two Atlanta meetings.
Where the line sits
Atlanta is an 8.5-point favorite with a total of 228.0, and the line has moved from Hawks -6.5 and 228.5 since our feed first recorded the game Friday morning. Wednesday's meeting closed at Hawks -1.5 and landed comfortably for Atlanta.
The total is the sharper question. Washington is 7-1 to the under this season, and Wednesday's game went under a 229.5 close. Its mix of poor shooting, a slow pace and an opponent effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 49.4%, 2nd in the league, keeps scores down. A Davis absence would cut into the one area where Washington scores easily.
