Portland Trail Blazers vs Los Angeles Lakers prediction: Doncic and the Lakers face a must-win Cup game against Portland
Portland already won a shootout in Los Angeles last month, and the Lakers' NBA Cup hopes depend on whether a top-ranked offense can win the possession battle this time.
| Spread | Los Angeles Lakers -3 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 231.5 |
- Expect another high-scoring game. Both offenses rank in the top two in efficiency, and both rank in the top two in first-half scoring.
- Portland on the offensive glass against the Lakers' defensive rebounding: 4th in offensive rebound rate against 27th in defensive rebound rate.
- Lakers -2.5 with a 232 total, and neither has moved. Portland is 5-0 on the road and 5-2 against the spread.
A Cup game the Lakers need
The Lakers have already lost one NBA Cup group game, and the way they lost it still hurts. On Oct. 30 at Golden State, Luka Doncic scored 21 points in the first quarter, and then the Lakers gave away a 25-point lead and lost 112-95. That left them with a lost head-to-head tiebreaker and a poor point differential in a format where only group winners and the best runner-up advance. Friday is close to do-or-die.
They have played well since, beating Toronto, Miami and Sacramento. Doncic is averaging 38.5 points and hitting 43.1% from three through eight games. Austin Reaves adds 23.3 a night. Together they power the league's best effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure that counts threes as 1.5 makes), at 60.2.
Portland's thinning backcourt
Portland comes in at 6-1 with the West's best record, but three guards are out. Ja Morant has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and isn't expected back until around Dec. 1. Shaedon Sharpe is out after right meniscus surgery; he averaged 20.8 points last season. Vit Krejci fractured his left leg late in Wednesday's win at Phoenix and is out until January. Scoot Henderson was listed questionable with left ankle soreness before the first meeting and isn't on the latest injury report.
The Blazers still have plenty of firepower. Damian Lillard is back after missing all of last season with an Achilles injury, and he and Donovan Clingan led the win in Phoenix. Deni Avdija, who averaged 24.2 points last season, scored 23 in last month's win over the Lakers. Portland leads the league at 118.8 points per 100 possessions. That is a big jump from 22nd last season for a roster that returned 69.8% of its minutes.
Second chances and the foul line
This is where Portland can steal possessions. The Blazers rebound 31.7% of their own misses, 4th in the league. The Lakers' defensive rebounding ranks 27th. Clingan pulled down 11.6 boards a night last season, and Walker Kessler will have to keep him off the glass while still protecting the rim.
The Lakers can get some of that back elsewhere. They lead the league in free throw rate (free throw attempts per shot), and Portland's defense ranks 22nd at keeping opponents off the line. Portland earns plenty of trips itself but makes just 73.9% of its free throws, 27th in the league. The Lakers turn the ball over a lot, 26th in turnover rate, but Portland ranks 26th at forcing turnovers, so the Lakers' mistakes may not cost them much.
Threes against Kessler's wall
Portland ranks 2nd in the share of shots it takes from three, and the Lakers rank 23rd in opponent 3-point percentage. Inside the arc it gets harder for Portland. Kessler is blocking 2.7 shots a game and shooting 71.8%, and the Lakers lead the league in block rate. Portland makes 59.5% of its twos, 2nd in the league, so this is a strength against a strength.
There is also a reunion. Matisse Thybulle, a former Blazer, starts for the Lakers. He averages 1.7 steals and has made 42.9% of his threes.
Where the number sits
The Lakers are 2.5-point favorites with a 232 total, the same numbers our feed first recorded Friday morning, and they are -148 on the moneyline. Portland has covered as an underdog in Los Angeles and in Denver this season. Each team won its last game by double digits on Wednesday, and neither is on a back-to-back.
The start may matter most. The Lakers score 65.8 first-half points a game, the most in the league, and Portland is right behind them. Sandro Mamukelashvili is questionable with an illness. If he sits, Jarred Vanderbilt and Ziaire Williams could see more minutes, and reports conflict on whether Adou Thiero will make his season debut.
