Detroit Red Wings vs Tampa Bay Lightning prediction: Red Wings bring a tired legs and Gibson problem into Tampa

Detroit's goalie choice on the second night of a back-to-back looks like the biggest question in this game, and Tampa Bay is perfect at home.

The line
LineTampa Bay Lightning -260 (puck line -1.5)
Total (over/under)6

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 3, 7:09 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Tampa Bay should control early play at home, where it is 6-0-0, while Detroit plays a second straight night after winning in Florida.
  • Goaltending decides it: John Gibson (.860) is Detroit's probable starter, against Andrei Vasilevskiy (.877), with neither confirmed.
  • Tampa Bay is -260 with Detroit +210; the total slid from 6.5 to 6.0, despite Tampa going 8-5 to the over.

The goalie behind Detroit's back-to-back

The Red Wings walked out of Sunrise on Monday with a 5-3 win over Florida, and Daniil Tarasov stopped 23 shots against his former team. Now they have to do it again the next night in Tampa, and the man expected in their crease is not the one who has been stopping pucks.

John Gibson is Detroit's probable starter, though nothing is confirmed. His season reads .860 with a 3.37 goals-against average across 10 games. Tarasov, by contrast, sits at .927 and 1.75 in five. That gap is the whole story of Detroit's season so far: the Red Wings allow just 24.6 shots per game, 5th of 32, yet their team save percentage ranks 20th. Gibson also left a game in late October with an eye issue, though he is in the projected goalie pair tonight.

Tampa's crease is cleaner but not spotless. Andrei Vasilevskiy is the expected starter at .877 with a 3.00 GAA. The Lightning's team save percentage ranks 29th, so neither side arrives with a goalie on a heater.

Same shot share, different finish

These teams drive play almost identically. Both own a 54.7% shot share, meaning their share of all shots in their games, with Detroit 5th and Tampa 6th. The split is what happens after the shot.

Tampa converts 12.3% of its shots, 8th in the league, and scores 3.69 goals per game, 5th. Detroit shoots 9.9%, 26th, which is why a team that tilts the ice so well scores only 2.93 per game. Against a Gibson-led Detroit defense, Tampa's finishing is the cleaner edge.

The Lightning also start fast. They score 1.23 first-period goals per game, 3rd of 32, while Detroit manages 0.67, 28th. A tired road team against a fast-starting home team is the matchup to watch in the first 20 minutes.

Special teams favor the visitors

This is where Detroit has a real counter. The Red Wings' power play, measured as power-play goals per opportunity, runs at 23.5%, 11th, and it showed up Monday when Justin Faulk scored on the man advantage to retake the lead in Florida. Tampa's penalty kill sits 18th at 77.1%.

The other side is grim for both. Tampa's power play is 15.2%, 28th, and Detroit's penalty kill is 70.2%, 25th. Tampa does draw plenty of calls, 3.54 power plays per game, 5th, so its struggling unit will get chances against a kill that has bled goals.

Who is missing

Detroit's depth is thin. Dylan Larkin is on injured reserve with a suspension and is absent from tonight's projected lines, though an earlier report had the coach expecting him back, so his status has carried some confusion. Marco Kasper (upper body) and Mason Appleton (undisclosed) are on injured reserve, and as of Friday the coach said both were still 10 days to two weeks away. Albert Johansson was listed as out on Monday's league report, and Simon Edvinsson remains on the non-roster list in a contract dispute.

Tampa will be without Zemgus Girgensons (lower body), and Yanni Gourde is on injured reserve after hip surgery. Erik Cernak was day-to-day as of Sunday but appears in the projected defense pairs. The projected top line reunites Jake Guentzel, Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov.

What the market says

Books make Tampa Bay a -260 favorite, with Detroit at +210, and the puck line sits at Tampa -1.5. The total opened at 6.5 in our feed and has dropped to 6.0.

That move runs against recent form. Every game in Tampa's recent run went over the total, and the Lightning are 8-5 to the over this season while Detroit is 9-6. Tampa also won the final three meetings last season, including 4-1 and 4-3 at home. This game opens a four-game season series and is Tampa's first divisional matchup of the year.

  • Watch warmups for Detroit's goalie: Tarasov in net changes the picture.
  • Watch Tampa's first period against Detroit's tired legs.
  • Watch Detroit's power play against Tampa's middling kill.
