Edmonton Oilers vs New Jersey Devils prediction: Hellebuyck's new crease faces McDavid and the NHL's sharpest finishers

New Jersey drives the shot clock better than almost anyone, but Edmonton turns fewer chances into more goals, and Tuesday's game turns on which of those habits wins out.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 3, 7:09 AM ET.

Quick take
  • Expect the Devils to own the puck and outshoot Edmonton, while the Oilers wait for chances and convert them at a league-best rate.
  • Edmonton's power play against New Jersey's penalty kill is the night's sharpest mismatch, softened by how rarely the Devils go shorthanded.
  • The Devils are -155 favorites and the total has dropped from 6.5 to 6.0. Edmonton is still unbeaten on the road at 7-0-0.

Volume against finishing

Two very different routes to winning collide in Newark. The Devils control games the slow way: their 56.9% shot share (their share of all shots in their games) ranks 2nd of 32, built on 32.6 shots per game. The problem is what happens next. New Jersey converts just 10.5% of its shots, 23rd in the league.

Edmonton is the opposite. The Oilers sit 16th in shot share but score on 16.2% of their shots, the best rate in hockey, and that drives 4.2 goals per game, 2nd overall. A rate that high will cool eventually, and a 15-game sample is small. Still, with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl doing the shooting, the Oilers don't need many looks.

Both teams also start fast on defense. Edmonton allows 0.47 first-period goals per game, 1st in the league, and New Jersey ranks 2nd. A quiet opening period would fit both profiles.

Hellebuyck against Jarry

Connor Hellebuyck is the probable starter for New Jersey in what could be his home debut after the Devils acquired him from Winnipeg on Oct. 23. He has been sharp in two starts with a .923 save percentage, but that is a tiny sample. Jake Allen carried the load before him at .886.

Tristan Jarry is expected to start for Edmonton, though neither team has confirmed either goalie. Jarry has posted a .901 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average. Behind him, the depth is thin. Devon Levi and Frederik Andersen are both on injured reserve, which is why journeyman Matt Tomkins started Sunday at Madison Square Garden and stopped 27 of 28 shots.

A power play against a soft kill

Edmonton's power play scores on 32.7% of its chances (power-play goals per opportunity), 3rd in the league. New Jersey's penalty kill stops just 70.0% of opponents' chances, which ranks 26th.

The Devils' saving grace is discipline. They go shorthanded 2.14 times per game, the fewest in the NHL, and lead the league in fewest penalty minutes. Edmonton draws 3.47 power plays per game, 6th, so something has to bend. If the Oilers get three or four chances, this matchup decides the game.

At the other end, neither unit inspires much. Edmonton kills 75.6% (21st), while New Jersey's power play converts 16.7% (24th).

Stars and the injury list

McDavid enters on a season-opening 15-game point streak with 39 points. Draisaitl has 12 goals, and Evan Bouchard has 26 points from the blue line. Edmonton is missing depth, though. Zach Hyman is on injured reserve with a neck injury, Matt Savoie is on long-term IR, and Isaac Howard is day-to-day with his status for tonight unknown.

For New Jersey, Jack Hughes leads with 16 points on 54 shots. Arseny Gritsyuk scored twice in Friday's 5-2 win at Vegas and has 8 goals. Anthony Mantha left that game and remains day-to-day with no newer update, while Evan Rodrigues is questionable with an illness. Seamus Casey is out after a knee procedure.

Where the market sits

The books make New Jersey a -155 favorite, with Edmonton at +132 and the Devils at -1.5 on the puck line. The total opened in our feed at 6.5 and now sits at 6.0, a move toward a lower-scoring game.

That lean fits Edmonton's recent form. The shutout wins over Calgary and the Islanders and the 4-1 win at MSG all stayed under. History favors the hosts: the Devils have won the last four head-to-head games, including a 2-1 win in Edmonton last January. Against that, the Oilers are 10-5 on the puck line this season, and the Devils have the rest edge, with four days off to Edmonton's two.
