Anaheim Ducks vs Vancouver Canucks prediction: Ducks' 34% power play takes aim at Vancouver's 30th-ranked kill
Two of the NHL's worst goaltending teams collide in Vancouver, and the side that wins the special-teams battle should finish ahead in a game the market expects to be busy.
| Line | Anaheim Ducks -154 (puck line -1.5) |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 6.5 |
- Expect chances at both ends: neither team keeps pucks out, and Vancouver's inability to hold possession hands Anaheim the territorial edge.
- Anaheim's power play, 2nd of 32, against a Canucks penalty kill that ranks 30th. The Ducks' own penalty trouble keeps it from being one-sided.
- Anaheim is a -154 road favorite with the total at 6.5, and the total is unchanged since our feed first saw the game; the Ducks' last four games went over.
A power play with a target
Vancouver has won three of its 16 games, and one of them came in Anaheim on Oct. 27, a 6-5 overtime win. The Canucks closed that night as a +180 underdog. Now the Ducks arrive at Rogers Arena as road favorites, and the matchup that best explains why sits on the special-teams sheet.
Anaheim's power play converts 34.0% of its chances (power-play goals per opportunity), 2nd of 32. Vancouver's penalty kill, the share of opposing power plays it survives, sits at 66.7%, 30th in the league. Every Canucks penalty is a genuine threat to become a goal.
The catch is Anaheim's own discipline. The Ducks are shorthanded 3.93 times a game, which ranks 30th. Their kill sits only 19th, so Vancouver's middling power play should get real looks too.
Goalies nobody fully trusts
Anaheim's crease is unsettled. After Sunday's win over Ottawa, Joel Quenneville said the team would take three goalies on its road trip and that he wasn't sure how the rotation would shake out. Laurent Brossoit, recalled from San Diego on Saturday, started that game and made 19 saves.
Lukas Dostal is the probable starter, though projections are split and some list Brossoit first. Dostal has a .872 save percentage this season, and the Ducks as a team rank 30th in save percentage.
Vancouver's numbers are no better as a group, 31st in team save percentage. Leevi Merilainen is expected to start and has been the steadier of the Canucks' two options at .897 over 11 games. Backup Kevin Lankinen sits at .812, which is why Merilainen's presence matters. Fourteen to sixteen games is a small sample for goaltending, but neither team has given bettors a reason to expect saves.
Vancouver can't keep the puck
The broader problem for the Canucks is volume. They average 21.5 shots on goal a game and allow 31.9, both last in the NHL. Their shot share, a team's portion of all shots in its games, is 40.2%, also 32nd.
Anaheim doesn't shoot much either, ranking 28th in shots. It makes up for it by finishing: the Ducks score on 14.0% of their shots, 4th in the league. Against a Vancouver defense that concedes volume and a goaltending group with an .859 team save percentage, that efficiency travels.
Watch the first period. The Canucks allow more first-period goals than any team in the league, while Anaheim ranks 6th in first-period scoring.
Bodies missing on both benches
Vancouver's forward group is thin. Filip Chytil was re-hurt in the Oct. 29 loss to San Jose and went on injured reserve the next day, and the bottom six has been reshuffled around his absence. Thatcher Demko remains on injured reserve after hip surgery; co-president Henrik Sedin said Monday he hopes the goalie will return before Christmas.
Anaheim lost A.J. Greer to injured reserve with an upper-body injury after a hit Sunday. Troy Terry (hip) was described as getting close as of Oct. 31, though his return did not appear imminent. Pavel Mintyukov is back after missing four games and played Sunday.
The puck line and total have not budged. Anaheim sits at -154 and Vancouver at +129, with the total at 6.5, the same as when our feed first recorded the game. The Ducks' last four games all cleared the total, and the Canucks have gone under in nine of 16.
