Western Carolina Catamounts vs UNC Asheville Bulldogs prediction: Western Carolina couldn't score inside at Chapel Hill; Asheville might let it
Two rebuilt mountain rivals meet at Kimmel Arena, and the Catamounts' cold night inside runs into a Bulldogs defense that has given up the paint.
| Spread | Western Carolina -3.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 152.5 |
- Asheville should push the tempo and score inside. Western Carolina likely leans on its new guards from three again.
- Western Carolina's drivers against an Asheville defense allowing 63.0% on twos, 330th nationally.
- Western Carolina is a 2.5-point road favorite with a 149.5 total, both unmoved. Asheville's 76.8-possession pace bears hardest on that total.
A rivalry with new faces
The Mountain Rivalry returns to Kimmel Arena with almost nobody left from the last chapter. Western Carolina brings back 14.9% of last season's minutes. UNC Asheville brings back 27.2%. So Saturday's matchup on ESPN+ is as much a first real look at two rebuilt rosters as it is the renewal of an old grudge.
Last season's team numbers are a weak guide here. For what it's worth, the two programs finished last season nearly level in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents): Western Carolina 228th and Asheville 233rd. The rest of this preview leans on the early games and the players actually on the floor.
Western Carolina's inside problem
Western Carolina lost 80-72 at North Carolina on Monday and still covered as a big underdog. It did that from distance. The Catamounts made 41.7% of their threes, 50th nationally, but just 28.6% of their twos, 361st of 363. Isaiah Manning, a Sam Houston transfer, went 1-of-12 from the field.
That interior number came against a North Carolina team ranked 27th in adjusted net efficiency. Asheville is a much softer test. The Bulldogs have allowed 63.0% shooting on twos, 330th in the country. They also rarely block shots, ranking 266th in block rate.
If Western Carolina's guards get downhill, the looks that missed in Chapel Hill should come easier here. If the Catamounts settle for threes again, they need another hot night from a backcourt that mostly came off benches elsewhere last season.
Asheville wants a track meet
Asheville has played fast, at 76.8 possessions per 40 minutes, 63rd nationally. Western Carolina's opener ran at 69.5, 234th. The home team will try to drag this game into the open floor, where its offense has been at its best. The Bulldogs have hit 67.2% of their twos, 27th nationally.
Their defense hasn't kept pace. Richmond hung 56 first-half points on Asheville in a 100-77 opener. Across both games, Bulldogs opponents have posted a 59.8% effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times), 334th. One of those two games was the 101-74 home win over Erskine, which carried no betting line, so treat the season numbers with care.
Turnovers and the foul line
Asheville's clearest flaw on offense is ball security. It has turned the ball over on 21.4% of possessions, 286th. Western Carolina hasn't shown it can punish that, forcing turnovers on just 12.9% of North Carolina's possessions, 334th.
The free throw line cuts the other way. Western Carolina sent North Carolina to the line constantly, with an opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) that ranks 348th. Asheville gets there often, ranking 115th in free throw rate, but it has made only 62.7% of its free throws, 277th. The Catamounts shot 81.5% from the line in their opener. In a game priced this tight, that gap could decide the final minutes.
Who carries the new rosters
Nine Catamounts made their Western Carolina debuts Monday. Two of them carried the scoring. Jaxon Prunty, a Charleston transfer, scored 18 points. Jaeden Roberts, from Hofstra, added 17 on 4-of-7 shooting from three. Malachi Brown averaged 12.2 points at Georgia State last season but scored just one point in his first game.
Asheville's bench guard Connor Dubsky leads the team at 15.0 points a game and has made 8 of 17 threes. Daniel Thomas averaged 2.8 points last season and has jumped to 13.0 points and 10.0 rebounds. Georgia Southern transfer Khayri Dunn has the highest usage on the team but only an 82.1 offensive rating. No absences have been reported for either team.
The market and the series
Western Carolina is a 2.5-point road favorite at -140 on the moneyline. The total sits at 149.5, and neither number has moved since our feed first saw the game Saturday morning. The Catamounts are 1-0 against the spread after covering at North Carolina, where the game stayed under. Asheville failed to cover at Richmond, where the game went over.
Western Carolina won the last meeting 80-73 in Cullowhee last November. Asheville won 78-61 the last time the teams met at Kimmel, in December 2024. The Bulldogs were picked fifth in the Big South preseason poll.
- Whether Western Carolina scores better inside against a defense ranked 330th on twos
- Asheville's turnovers, its biggest leak on offense
- Free throws late, where the Catamounts have the edge
