Bethune-Cookman Wildcats vs Grand Canyon Antelopes prediction: Grand Canyon's free-throw barrage tests a rebuilt Bethune-Cookman

The Lopes got to the line and the offensive glass at will in their opener, and Bethune-Cookman's new-look defense has given up free throws by the bucket through two games.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 7, 6:01 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Grand Canyon should control the paint, the glass and the foul line, while Bethune-Cookman needs threes to keep the margin respectable.
  • Grand Canyon's interior attack against a Bethune-Cookman defense ranked 339th in opponent free throw rate.
  • Grand Canyon sits at -21.5 with a 152.5 total, unmoved all day; Bethune-Cookman's first two games both went under.

A trip to the line, repeatedly

Grand Canyon's season is one game old, but the shape of its offense was hard to miss. The Lopes beat Texas Southern 103-79 on Nov. 2 with a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 63.1%, 11th in Division I, and grabbed 48.6% of their own misses, 23rd nationally. They also hit 71.0% of their twos.

That profile lines up with Bethune-Cookman's weak spots. The Wildcats rank 339th of 363 in opponent free throw rate and 253rd in defensive rebound percentage through two games. Texas Southern rates 328th by last season's adjusted net rating, so take the opener for what it is. Still, if the Lopes keep getting second shots and whistles, this game gets away early.

The catch is the stripe itself. Grand Canyon made just 63.4% of its free throws in the opener, and Bethune-Cookman sits at 64.6%. A lot of trips to the line doesn't guarantee a lot of points.

A SWAC favorite starting over

Bethune-Cookman was picked first in the SWAC preseason poll, and Reggie Theus, now in his sixth season, has built a contender in that league. The 0-2 start, with losses to Furman and Texas Tech, doesn't change that. The roster, though, is mostly new. Players back from last season's 17-15 team played only 24.3% of its minutes, and top scorer Jakobi Heady is gone after averaging 18.2 points.

The early production comes from guards. Mari Jordan leads the team at 11.0 points and has made 4 of 7 threes. Jaylen Jones, a transfer from Jacksonville, carries a team-high 26.1% usage off the bench. Returning forward Quentin Heady was treated for an injury in the second half at Texas Tech on Nov. 5, and the school hasn't said whether it affects his availability.

The Wildcats' path to hanging around runs through the arc. They have made 37.5% of their threes, 97th nationally, while making only 41.9% of their twos, which ranks 324th.

Grand Canyon's new faces

The Lopes reloaded through the portal, and the newcomers looked comfortable right away. Dylan Darling and Tre Holloman made their Grand Canyon debuts as the starting guards. Darling posted 15 points and 6 assists. Holloman, who shot 40.2% from three at NC State last season, added 6 assists.

Jaden Henley, the top returner, scored 22 points with a 38.1% usage rate. He did it without Preseason All-Mountain West guard Makaih Williams, who missed the opener with an injury. The school hasn't given an update on Williams since.

Amarion Dickerson, back from a hip injury that kept him out 11 months, blocked 5 shots off the bench. The school described him on Nov. 6 as an active bench contributor. An unverified report lists him as out for Saturday, and Grand Canyon hasn't confirmed it.

Tempo and the number

The line opened at Grand Canyon -21.5 and hasn't moved, and the total has held at 152.5. Bethune-Cookman's two games both went under, and it plays slowly. Its pace of 67 possessions per 40 minutes ranks 304th, and it has scored just 26.0 first-half points per game.

Grand Canyon ran at 78 possessions in its opener, but it played at 66.4 last season, 247th nationally. Whichever tempo shows up decides the total more than anything else.

Bethune-Cookman covered as a 29.75-point underdog at Texas Tech despite 12 first-half turnovers. That loss came just two days before this tip, while Grand Canyon has had five days off. Grand Canyon failed to cover at -28.5 in its opener.
