San José St Spartans vs UC Irvine Anteaters prediction: San José State's new-look guards test Olivier Rioux and UC Irvine's paint
A Spartan roster rebuilt almost from scratch brings a scorching opener to Irvine, where the Big West favorite has made a habit of shutting the lane.
| Spread | UC Irvine -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 146.5 |
- Expect Irvine to pound the paint and the offensive glass while San José State's new guards try to score over a bigger front line.
- Joey Chammaa and Mekhi Mason against Irvine's interior: the Spartans hit 76.7% of their twos in the opener, fourth in Division I.
- Irvine moved from -6.5 to -8. San José State covered -8.25 in its opener, but only 8.2% of last season's minutes are back.
A wall with new bricks
UC Irvine was picked first in the Big West coaches' poll, and the reason starts on defense. Last season the Anteaters went 23-12 and finished 29th of 365 in adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). Opponents shot 42.2% on twos against them, the lowest mark in the country.
The man most responsible for that number is gone. Kyle Evans, who blocked 3.2 shots a game, left for NC State. Irvine's answer is Olivier Rioux, a center who arrived from Florida and debuted with 13 points and 12 rebounds against Chapman. Irvine's rotation is also bigger than San José State's, at 78.2 inches on average to 76.3, weighted by minutes.
That sets up the central question of the night. San José State scored 95 points in its opener because almost everything went in near the rim. Robert Vaihola, a center who played at Minnesota last season, made all six of his shots. Rioux and Irvine's length make that a far harder trip.
Two openers, two different tests
Both teams won big at home, and neither win says much. Irvine beat Chapman 92-66, and Chapman is not a Division I opponent, so every Irvine stat this season comes from that one game. San José State beat UTSA 95-74, but UTSA ranked 339th in last season's adjusted net efficiency.
The bigger caution sits with the visitors. San José State returns just 8.2% of last season's minutes from a team that went 9-24. Last season's numbers describe a different roster. Tim Miles, in his sixth season, rebuilt around transfers. Chammaa (from Arkansas State) scored 27 on 6-of-9 shooting, and Mason (from Wake Forest) added 26 while carrying a 38.2% usage rate. Guard Pasha Goodarzi, the Spartans' top returner, was out for the opener with an undisclosed issue; there was no update after Nov. 2.
The giveaway problem
For all the shot-making, San José State coughed the ball up. Its turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) was 27.6% against UTSA, 354th of 363. A team that gives away possessions like that can't afford to give away shots to a team that crashes the glass.
Irvine did not force many turnovers against Chapman, and its forced-turnover rate ranks 305th. Last season's group was more disruptive, at 19.0%, 73rd nationally. If the Anteaters pressure the new Spartan ballhandlers, that is where an 8-point margin gets built. Both teams hit the offensive glass hard in their openers, so second chances should be plentiful.
Free throws could cut both ways
Irvine lives at the line. Its free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt) was 54.1%, 33rd nationally, which fits a team that takes few threes. It ranks 333rd in 3-point attempt rate. The problem is converting: Irvine made 57.6% of its free throws, 323rd.
San José State's defense kept UTSA off the line, and the Spartans made 86.4% of their own free throws, 12th in Division I. If this one is close late, that gap matters more than any other.
Where the number sits
The market likes the home favorite. Irvine opened at -6.5 in our feed and now sits at -8, with 10 books quoting. The total barely moved, from 146 to 146.5. San José State's opener closed at 155.5 and went over, but Irvine's defensive pedigree argues for a slower-scoring night. Tip is 10 p.m. ET in the Bren Events Center.
- Can Vaihola and the Spartan guards finish against Rioux?
- Does San José State's turnover rate improve against a real defense?
- How many free throws does Irvine leave at the line?
