Fresno St Bulldogs vs UC San Diego Tritons prediction: Dragos Lungu and a brand-new Fresno State face a loaded UC San Diego
Fresno State brought back none of last season's minutes, and its first Division I test comes tonight against a UC San Diego team that kept its core and stacked its backcourt with transfers.
| Spread | UC San Diego -11 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 151.5 |
- UC San Diego's continuity and depth at guard should travel against a Fresno State roster still learning itself, but both openers came against non-Division I teams.
- Fresno State's rim attack and trips to the line against a Tritons defense that must keep Lungu out of the paint.
- UC San Diego moved from -8.5 to -9.5 and the total climbed to 151.5; both teams played above 78 possessions in their openers.
A roster built from nothing
Fresno State opens its first Pac-12 season with a team that is new from top to bottom. The Bulldogs return 0.0% of last season's minutes, and the four biggest departures, led by Jake Heidbreder, are all gone. Vance Walberg, now in his third season, rebuilt the roster through the transfer portal.
The early answer to who carries it is Dragos Lungu, a guard whose earlier stops were UT Martin and San Diego. He scored 30 in the 88-79 opening win over Fresno Pacific, and all five starters reached double figures. That's encouraging, but the opponent was not a Division I team, and everything from both openers comes from a single game.
Last season's final adjusted ratings, which measure points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, put Fresno State 131st and UC San Diego 127th. With nobody back, Fresno's number describes a team that no longer exists.
Continuity with new guards
UC San Diego is the opposite case. The Tritons return 63.6% of last season's minutes, and the Big West coaches' poll picked them second. Clint Allard then added a wave of transfer guards around returners Leo Beath, Alex Chaikin and Tom Beattie.
The newcomers drove the 100-75 opener over Whittier. Kayde Dotson scored 21 off the bench. Rahmir Barno, in from Florida Gulf Coast, added 19. Treysen Eaglestaff, the West Virginia transfer and the Big West's preseason transfer of the year in one listing, scored 29 in an exhibition loss to USC on Oct. 17.
The Tritons also protected the ball. Their turnover rate, giveaways per 100 possessions, was 10.0%, 16th nationally after the first week. Fresno State ranked 325th in steal rate, so the Bulldogs are unlikely to create many extra possessions from live-ball turnovers. One caution: UC San Diego trailed Whittier 44-40 at halftime before pulling away, having scored just 40 in the first half.
Fresno lives at the line
Fresno State's opener showed an inside-out team that rarely shoots threes. Its 3-point attempt rate of 23.7% ranked 360th, near the very bottom in volume. Instead the Bulldogs drew fouls, with a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 47.5%.
The problem came after the whistle. Fresno made 60.7% of its free throws, 295th nationally, and Lungu went 45.5% at the line. In a game that tightens late, those misses decide covers.
The perimeter piece to watch is Ross Candelino, who made 42.6% of his threes at Lipscomb last season. If he finds his range, Fresno can pull UC San Diego's defense out of the lane and give Lungu room to work.
Pace and the number
Both teams ran in their openers. Fresno State played at 78.5 possessions per 40 minutes and UC San Diego at 79.5, both inside the top 40. Last season the Tritons were a more measured team, ranked 89th in pace, so the opener may not be the new normal.
The market has leaned the same way as those openers. UC San Diego moved from -8.5 to -9.5 across 10 books, and the total rose from 148.5 to 151.5. The last meeting, in Fresno last November, went to the Tritons 78-73.
What to watch:
- How often Lungu reaches the line, and whether Fresno converts.
- Dotson's minutes off the bench as a measure of UC San Diego's depth edge.
- Whether the tempo holds near the opening-week pace that pushed the total up.
