Vermont vs Fairfield prediction: Vermont's veteran core and rebounding wall test a rebuilt Fairfield
The America East favorite brings back nearly its whole rotation, while Fairfield must replace Braden Sparks and Brandon Benjamin in the first Challenge game at Mahoney Arena.
- Expect a slow, half-court game in which Vermont's returning rotation looks sharper early than a Fairfield roster still learning its new pieces.
- Watch Fairfield's offensive rebounding, which last season ranked 33rd, against a Vermont defense that finished first nationally on the defensive glass last season.
- No spread or total yet. When a total appears, weigh Vermont's pace last season, which ranked 330th of 365.
Continuity against a rebuild
Vermont opens its season with nearly everyone back under John Becker, who has led the program to seven America East titles. The Catamounts return 82.0% of last season's minutes from a 22-12 team, and the America East coaches picked them first with seven first-place votes. Junior forward Gus Yalden, a preseason all-conference pick, is the engine.
Fairfield is starting over in places that matter. The Stags return 50.2% of their minutes and only 42.8% of their points. Braden Sparks (17.2 points per game) is gone, and Brandon Benjamin, the interior anchor who averaged 10.4 rebounds, left for Boston College. Chris Casey has a 21-13 season behind him, but little of the scoring that built it. Early in November, a team that already knows its roles has a real edge over one still sorting them out.
The fight on the glass
Fairfield's best weapon last season was second chances. The Stags grabbed 36.1% of their own misses, 33rd in the country, which papered over an offense that shot poorly. Vermont is the worst possible opponent for that plan. The Catamounts collected 77.6% of opponents' misses, the best defensive rebounding rate in Division I.
The question is who crashes for Fairfield now that Benjamin is gone. Declan Wucherpfennig, a guard who pulled down 8.5 rebounds a game, is the holdover. Qadir Martin arrives from Mercyhurst with 7.0 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game. If those two can't generate extra possessions, Fairfield's offense has little else to lean on. Vermont rarely chases its own misses (27.1% offensive rebound rate, 307th), so this battle is mostly one-directional.
Slow tempo, uneven shooting
Vermont plays at a crawl. Its 64.3 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 330th last season, and Fairfield's 67.3 sat near the middle of the country. Expect Vermont to dictate a grinding game.
Within those possessions, the Catamounts let it fly: 44.9% of their shots came from three, 70th nationally. TJ Hurley hit 38.5% of his 205 attempts. Fairfield, by contrast, posted an effective field goal percentage (which counts threes as 1.5 shots) of 49.1%, 305th, and made just 48.4% of its twos. Vermont's interior defense held opponents to 48.0% inside the arc, 51st, so the Stags' half-court offense faces a tough first look with a new cast.
A rare trip and a new event
This is the opener of the inaugural America East–Metro Challenge, a two-year agreement, and it gives Fairfield a home crowd. It's also Vermont's first visit to Fairfield's campus since 1980. The last meeting was a one-point game: Fairfield won 67-66 on a neutral floor in November 2024.
There's an undercurrent, too. This is Fairfield's final season in the Metro before it moves to the CAA in July 2027. No injuries or eligibility issues had surfaced for either team as of this week, though Fairfield coverage has been thin.
