Hofstra vs Princeton prediction: Princeton brings everyone back to test Hofstra's wall around the rim

A 9-20 Tigers team returns intact, and its first real exam comes against a CAA champion whose defense made two-point shots disappear last season.

Quick take
  • Expect a slow half-court game where Princeton's veteran group has to find points against a Hofstra defense that smothered interior shots last season.
  • Princeton's inside scoring, 305th in two-point shooting last season, against a Hofstra defense that held opponents to 44.0% inside the arc.
  • No line is posted yet. Last season's adjusted net efficiency ranks, Hofstra 92nd and Princeton 246th, set the baseline once one appears.

Continuity against a champion

Princeton's pitch for this season is simple: nobody left. A mid-September release said the entire 2025-26 roster returns, and a mid-October preview said Mitch Henderson, now in his 15th season, has five starters back. That group went 9-20 last season, so continuity alone settles nothing. The question is whether a year together turns a losing team into a competitive one. The Ivy League preseason poll offers some optimism. Penn was picked to win the league, but Princeton drew 97 points and one first-place vote in the preseason poll.

Hofstra arrives with a banner. The Pride went 24-11, won the CAA tournament and the automatic bid that came with it, then fell 90-70 to Alabama in the NCAA Tournament first round. Speedy Claxton is in his fifth season. The roster has turned over in at least one key spot: Cruz Davis, a high-scoring guard, transferred to Texas Tech. That makes Hofstra's numbers from last season a softer guide than Princeton's, which describe essentially the same players.

Hofstra's paint defense

Last season's Hofstra defense was built to deny the rim. Opponents made just 44.0% of their two-point shots, 3rd-best of 365 Division I teams. Overall, foes posted a 45.4% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure that counts threes as 1.5 shots), 8th in the country.

That is a bad fit for Princeton. The Tigers made 49.1% of their twos, 305th nationally, and leaned on the perimeter instead: more than four in ten of their shots were threes. They hit 34.2% of them, a middle-of-the-pack number. Hofstra didn't give much away out there either, holding opponents to 31.6% from deep. If Princeton's returning shooters haven't taken a step, open looks will be hard to find.

Where Hofstra finds points

The other end tilts the opposite way. Princeton's interior defense was among the weakest in the country last season: opponents made 55.2% of their twos (328th), and the Tigers blocked just 6.6% of opponent two-point tries (333rd).

Hofstra wasn't a great inside team itself, ranking 295th in two-point shooting. Its weapon was the three, at 37.0%, 30th nationally. How much of that shooting left with Davis is the biggest unknown on the Hofstra side.

The most even fight is on the glass. Hofstra grabbed 35.3% of its own misses (48th), while Princeton cleared 72.2% of opponent misses (68th). Second chances could swing a game this deliberate.

Few possessions, familiar foes

Neither team wants to run. Princeton played at 64.1 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 339th of 365, and Hofstra at 65.4, 294th. Neither forced many turnovers, so empty trips will be scarce and every miss counts.

The series has been tight and site-proof lately. Hofstra won at Jadwin 83-77 in November 2022, and Princeton won at Hofstra 74-67 a year later. Last season's final adjusted net efficiency (point differential per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) separated the teams by a wide margin, with Hofstra at 8.8 and Princeton at -7.4. A fully returning Princeton roster at home is the main argument that the gap narrows this time.
