Arkansas-Monticello vs Louisiana Tech prediction: Louisiana Tech opens in Ruston with a defense-first identity to prove

Arkansas-Monticello is a tune-up, but Talvin Hester's Bulldogs need a better offense after being picked 12th in the Sun Belt.

Quick take
  • Expect a slow home opener in which Louisiana Tech's size and rim protection should control a non-Division I opponent.
  • Watch Kyran Tilley, a preseason All-Sun Belt Third Team pick, and whether Tech's half-court offense looks sharper than it did last season.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season Tech played at 65.1 possessions per 40 minutes, 301st nationally.

A defense that traveled well

Louisiana Tech went 20-14 last season by guarding, not scoring. Its defensive efficiency, points allowed per 100 possessions, ranked 22nd of 365. Opponents shot just 45.1% inside the arc, 9th in the country.

The engine was rim protection. Tech blocked 15.7% of opponents' two-point tries, 5th nationally. It also chased misses: an offensive rebound rate of 37.2% ranked 17th. Against an opponent from outside Division I, size and second chances should be a significant edge in Ruston.

The offense is the real test

The other side of last season's profile was rough. Tech's offensive efficiency ranked 292nd, and it shot 30.0% from three, 350th. Free throws didn't help either: 66.7%, 346th.

That explains the modest outlook. Sun Belt coaches picked the Bulldogs 12th with 64 points in the preseason poll released Oct. 19. Those numbers are all last season's, and the roster has changed, so this opener is a first look at whether Hester, in his 5th season, has found more shooting. Kyran Tilley, named to the preseason All-Sun Belt Third Team, is the name to watch.

Weevils in transition

Arkansas-Monticello, coached by Chad Tapp, closed last season with a 75-58 Senior Day loss to Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 28 and then graduated five seniors, including Tyler Webb and Isaac Jackson. A group that lost five seniors and is making a road trip to a Division I arena is the kind of opponent Tech should handle on the glass and at the rim.

No injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either side as of today. With no line posted, the market has yet to set the size of the expected gap.
