East-West University vs Tennessee State prediction: Travis Harper II and a rebuilt Tennessee State open against East-West

The result is rarely in doubt against a non-Division I visitor, so the real interest is what Nolan Smith's reshaped roster looks like in its first night out.

Quick take
  • Tennessee State should control this from the tip, and its pressure and pace could produce another lopsided score against a USCAA visitor.
  • Watch Travis Harper II, last season's most efficient returning scorer, working beside a wave of power-conference newcomers.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. The last meeting, in November 2024, ended 110-33 to Tennessee State.

A new roster's first test

Tennessee State comes off a 23-10 season that ended with an OVC tournament title, a 93-67 rout of Morehead State, and an NCAA Tournament first-round loss to Iowa State on March 20. Nolan Smith, in his second season, shared OVC coach of the year honors and signed an extension through 2031 in April.

The roster around him has changed a lot. The Tigers bring in 12 newcomers, four of whom have played significant minutes at power-conference schools, and former five-star recruit Aaron Bradshaw committed in May. Players back from last season account for 61.6% of last season's minutes. East-West, a USCAA program coached by Tommie Posley, is not a Division I team, and the Tigers beat it 110-33 when the teams last met at home in 2024. That leaves the scoreboard mostly settled. The rotation is the story, and so is how quickly the newcomers fit in.

Pressure built for blowouts

Last season Tennessee State played fast and took the ball away. Last season Tennessee State ran the 24th-fastest pace in Division I, and its defense forced turnovers on 20.2% of possessions, 36th nationally. Its steal rate ranked 15th.

That style punishes thin, less athletic rosters. Expect the Tigers to press, turn steals into transition points, and give the newcomers a lot of open-floor minutes. One caution about last season's numbers: adjusted for opponents, the Tigers finished 192nd in net efficiency. The gap between their raw net efficiency rank (90th) and the adjusted rank suggests the schedule helped their raw numbers.

Harper leads the returners

Travis Harper II is the returner who matters most. He scored 17.2 points a game last season and hit 39.1% of his threes, and his offensive rating of 127 led the regulars. Point guard Dante Harris started all 33 games and averaged 4.5 assists. Leading scorer Aaron Nkrumah is gone, and frontcourt starters Jalen Pitre and Antoine Lorick III both left for Buffalo. That makes the minutes up front the clearest open question. Nothing has been reported on injuries or availability for either team.

Key players

  • Travis Harper II (Tennessee State): He averaged 17.2 points last season on 39.1% three-point shooting.
  • Dante Harris (Tennessee State): He started all 33 games last season and averaged 4.5 assists and 1.7 steals.
  • Carlous Williams (Tennessee State): He averaged 5.6 points in 19.4 minutes last season and could take on a bigger frontcourt role.
