Toledo Rockets vs Marshall Thundering Herd prediction: Toledo's cold jumper and missing center face a reloaded Marshall

Both programs rebuilt over the summer, but only Marshall's version has looked finished, and Toledo arrives on short rest with its big man's status unknown.

Quick take
  • Marshall's guards should control the perimeter at home unless Toledo's shooters finally find the range in a third straight road game.
  • Toledo's thin interior, with Austin Parks' status unknown, against Emmanuel Manyuon and a Marshall team that cleaned the defensive glass in its opener.
  • Marshall is a 2.5-point favorite and the total climbed to 158.5, though both Toledo games stayed under the closing number.

Two rebuilds, one early answer

Both of these programs spent the offseason starting over. Toledo brings back only 36.0% of last season's minutes, and the two guards who carried that team are gone: Sonny Wilson to South Florida and Leroy Blyden Jr. to Kansas. Marshall turned over even more, returning just 25.7% of its minutes and welcoming 11 newcomers.

The difference so far is that Marshall's new pieces clicked right away. Three newcomers started against Buffalo, and the Herd won 92-65 at Cam Henderson Center. Toledo, meanwhile, lost its opener 71-70 at Arkansas State and then got run off the floor 91-61 at No. 6 Michigan State on Thursday. Saturday is the Rockets' third straight road game, on two days of rest. Marshall has had five.

Toledo cannot buy a three

Last season's Toledo team was a shooting outfit. This one has made 22.9% of its threes, 327th of 363 Division I teams, and its effective field goal percentage (which counts a made three as 1.5 field goals) sits at 41.2. Two games is a small sample, but the misses have been widespread. Mynor Strong, who led the Rockets with 11 points at Michigan State, is 3 of 16 from deep after shooting 34.9% on threes last season.

Marshall's perimeter defense held Buffalo to 18.5% from three, 16th nationally after one game. Buffalo is not Michigan State, but it was a cleaner shooting night for the opponent than anything Toledo has produced. If the Rockets' guards start hitting, this becomes a different game. Until they do, Marshall's backcourt has the edge.

The hole in the middle

Senior center Austin Parks missed the Michigan State game with an injury, and Toledo had not said as of Thursday whether he will play at Marshall. The Rockets looked lost in the paint without him. Last season Parks posted a 61.6% effective field goal percentage and blocked 1.2 shots a game.

The early numbers show the cost. Toledo's defensive rebound percentage is 60.9, 323rd nationally, and its opponents are earning free throws at a rate of 48.0 attempts per 100 shots, 312th. Marshall did not crash the offensive glass much against Buffalo, but Manyuon grabbed 11 rebounds from the guard spot. Without Parks, second chances and trips to the line could decide this as much as any jumper.

What the market is pricing

Marshall is a 2.5-point favorite, unchanged since our feed first saw the game, with a home moneyline of -148. The total has moved more, climbing from 156.0 to 158.5. That rise leans on Marshall's explosive opener; both Toledo games finished under the closing total.

Last season's final ratings would have liked Toledo here. The Rockets finished 130th in adjusted net efficiency (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), while Marshall finished 183rd. With so little of either roster back, those numbers carry less weight than usual. History also sits with Toledo, which leads the all-time series 40-25, but Marshall won the most recent meeting in Toledo last November.
