St. Bonaventure Bonnies vs Canisius Golden Griffins prediction: Benjamin Bill and the Bonnies' size test a Canisius team with no rim defense

St. Bonaventure's shot-blockers and paint scorers face a rebuilt Canisius defense that let Penn State walk to the basket, if the Bonnies can finally make a free throw.

Quick take
  • St. Bonaventure should pound the paint against a Canisius defense that barely contested twos at Penn State, unless free throws and turnovers keep it close.
  • Benjamin Bill against a Canisius frontcourt that blocked 2.2% of Penn State's two-point attempts, 357th nationally.
  • St. Bonaventure is favored by 8.5, down from 11.5 when our feed first saw the game, after its 9-of-21 free-throw night against Youngstown State.

Where Canisius bleeds points

Two programs that rebuilt almost from scratch open their Buffalo chapter with an old local grudge and very little film. St. Bonaventure's new era began with a home loss to Youngstown State. Canisius's began with a 97-57 beating at Penn State. Saturday's Koessler Athletic Center home opener asks which debut was the outlier.

The clearest answer sits near the basket. Penn State made 69.6% of its two-point shots against Canisius, 352nd of 363 teams, and the Golden Griffins blocked almost nothing. Penn State led 47-26 at halftime without needing to shoot from deep.

That is the Bonnies' preferred lane. They take threes on just 28.3% of their shots, 346th nationally, and they protect their own rim: their block rate (share of opponent two-pointers rejected) of 22.9% ranks 11th. Benjamin Bill blocked four shots and went 6 of 8 in the opener. St. Bonaventure also plays bigger, at a minutes-weighted 78.0 inches against Canisius's 76.7.

Nine of 21

The Bonnies led Youngstown State 36-32 at halftime and lost 79-71. The free-throw line explains a lot of it: they made 9 of 21, a 42.9% rate that ranks 361st of 363 after one game.

Canisius fouled freely at Penn State, allowing an opponent free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) of 44.6%, 294th. If that continues, the Bonnies will get chances to repair the damage, and a repeat of Monday's misses is the likeliest way a heavy favorite lets this get tight.

Canisius generates almost no free throws of its own. Its free throw rate of 14.8% ranks 359th, so the Golden Griffins will have to score from the floor against a shot-blocking front line.

Turnovers and second chances

Canisius gave the ball away on 23.3% of its possessions at Penn State, 320th. St. Bonaventure's steal rate of 14.1% ranks 90th, and Taj Au-Duke had three steals against Youngstown State.

The Bonnies' weak spot was the defensive glass. They grabbed only 57.8% of Youngstown State's misses, 336th. Canisius may not be built to punish that: it rebounded 24.4% of its own misses at Penn State, 311th. One game is a small sample, but both trends point toward St. Bonaventure winning the possession battle.

Two rosters built from new parts

Mike MacDonald is the first new face on the Bonnies' bench in nearly two decades, and he inherited a roster returning just 14.0% of last season's minutes. Darryl Simmons II left for Villanova. Canisius returns 0.2% of last season's minutes under Jim Christian, so last season's team numbers say little about either side.

Availability clouds the Bonnies' frontcourt. The school said Oct. 26 that forward Mason Blackwood is sidelined with a foot injury and will undergo further evaluation. Forward Joe Grahovac sat out the Oct. 24 exhibition with hamstring soreness, and his status for Saturday is unsettled. No Canisius injuries have been reported.

Zach Philipkoski carried the Bonnies with 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting. For Canisius, Michael Wilson Jr. scored 30 in an exhibition at Robert Morris, then shot 21.4% at Penn State. Vinny Sigona went 0 for 5 from three after making 40.1% last season at East Texas A&M.

What the market is saying

St. Bonaventure is favored by 8.5, down from 11.5 when our feed first saw the game, with the moneyline at -375. The total has climbed from 144.0 to 147.5, even though both teams' openers went under.

Neither team covered Monday: the Bonnies lost outright as 10.5-point favorites, and Canisius fell short of a 23.75-point cushion. St. Bonaventure won the last two meetings, including 87-78 at Canisius in 2024.
