Southern Utah vs High Point prediction: High Point's reloaded roster tests a Southern Utah team starting over

Both programs rebuilt over the summer, but High Point restocked with proven Division I starters and has already handled Liberty, while Southern Utah's real test starts in North Carolina.

Quick take
  • High Point should have the edge at home, especially if its defense keeps forcing mistakes from a Southern Utah team that has only played West Coast Baptist so far.
  • Jaiden Feroah, Southern Utah's best returner, against a High Point defense that held Liberty to 19.2% from three.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; High Point covered -8.25 and stayed under 155.5 in its opener against Liberty.

Two rebuilds, different foundations

Both of these teams spent the offseason starting over, and that is the most important thing to know before reading any number below. High Point returns players who logged 31.7% of last season's minutes from a team that went 31-5, won a second straight Big South title and reached the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32. Southern Utah brings back just 24.2% of its minutes from a 10-22 team.

That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide for either side. The difference is in what replaced the departures. Second-year coach Flynn Clayman rebuilt around Division I starters: CJ Brown from South Florida, Curtis Williams Jr. from Tulane, Isaac Garrett from Oakland, Frankquon Sherman from Kennesaw State and Jason Rivera-Torres from Monmouth. Voters noticed, making High Point the Big South preseason favorite. Rob Jeter's Southern Utah, in its first full season in the Big Sky, was picked 10th in both the coaches' and media polls.

What the openers actually told us

High Point's opener carries real weight. The Panthers beat Liberty 72-57 on a neutral floor, and Liberty rates 109th in opponent-adjusted net efficiency, a respectable early test. The defense did the work: Liberty made just 19.2% of its threes, a figure that ranks 32nd nationally after one week.

Southern Utah's 134-69 win over West Coast Baptist tells us almost nothing. That opponent carries no Division I rating, so the Thunderbirds' eye-popping season efficiency marks are noise. Thursday is effectively their first look at Division I competition.

Ball security is the pressure point

Last season's High Point team lived on takeaways. It forced turnovers on 22.3% of opponent possessions (turnover rate is giveaways per 100 possessions), 7th in the country, and ranked 2nd in steal rate. Most of the players behind those numbers are gone, and the opener was less convincing: High Point forced turnovers on 16.7% of Liberty's possessions, 196th of 303.

Southern Utah's history points the wrong way here. Last season the Thunderbirds coughed it up on 19.7% of their possessions, 339th of 365. A new backcourt could change that, and freshman Rashaad Davis handed out six assists in 18 minutes against West Coast Baptist. But until Southern Utah protects the ball against a Division I defense, this is the matchup most likely to tilt the game.

Feroah and the new frontcourt

Jaiden Feroah is the one proven piece Southern Utah brings across the country. The grad forward, a preseason All-Big Sky pick, averaged 13.5 points last season and hit 41.5% of his threes, and he is the Thunderbirds' best answer to a defense that just smothered Liberty's shooters. Tennessee Tech transfer JaJuan Nicholls adds interior scoring after shooting 62.7% from the field there last season, and freshman DJ Smith scored 13 in his debut.

High Point's headliner is Cam'Ron Fletcher, the Big South Preseason Player of the Year, who averaged 13.2 points last season. Fletcher was not among the six Panthers who played the most minutes against Liberty, and no availability news has surfaced for either team, so his role Thursday is worth checking near tip. Williams led the way in the opener with 12 points, and freshman Trey Pearson gave the bench a lift.

Tempo, rest and the missing number

No spread or total has been posted yet. When one appears, the pace question matters. High Point played slowly against Liberty, at 66.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 253rd nationally, after running at 71.3 last season, 32nd. Whether that was the matchup or a new identity under a remade roster is an open question.

Both teams arrive rested, with Southern Utah off for 10 days and High Point for 11. This is High Point's first home game of the season at the Qubein Center, and Southern Utah makes the long trip east for a 5 PM Mountain tip.
