Canisius vs Brown prediction: Brown chases a full 40 minutes against a rebuilt Canisius

Brown's defense carried it for a half in its opener before the game slipped away, and Canisius arrives with a transfer-built roster still looking for a shot that falls.

Quick take
  • Brown's defense should shape a low-possession game; the question is whether a new-look Canisius offense can score enough to stay within reach.
  • Canisius' shooters against Brown's perimeter defense. Vinny Sigona hit 40.1% from three last season but went 0 for 5 in the opener.
  • No line posted yet. Both teams went under in their openers, and Brown lost outright after closing as an 8.5-point favorite against New Hampshire.

Two programs starting over

Brown has a new coach and a sour first memory. The Bears led New Hampshire 27-20 at halftime of their Nov. 2 opener, then watched a 13-2 run after a tie at 39 decide it. Canisius has new nearly everything, and its debut was a 97-57 loss at Penn State. Thursday night in Providence, one of them gets its first win.

Eric Reveno, named head coach on July 24, 2026, runs Brown after a decade at Portland and a stint as associate head coach at Stanford. He inherited continuity: twelve players are back from 2025-26, including Jeremiah Jenkins and Isaiah Langham, alongside six newcomers. The Ivy League's preseason poll picked Brown seventh.

Jim Christian's Canisius roster was built through the portal, with transfers from Cleveland State, UNC Greensboro, East Texas A&M, UT Rio Grande Valley and others. Its top returner, Trevor Augustine, averaged 1.8 minutes over eight games last season. That makes last season's adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) of -21.1, 345th of 365, a weak guide to this group. Brown's last-season mark of -11.5 ranked 289th and comes from a roster that largely returned.

Brown's defense held, then didn't

For a half, Brown looked like the defense it was last season. New Hampshire finished with an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 40.0%, 63rd of 303 teams so far. The Bears also cleaned the glass, grabbing 79.4% of available defensive rebounds.

That matters against a Canisius team that has to manufacture offense. The Griffins rebounded just 24.4% of their own misses at Penn State, so second chances may be scarce. Brown's problem was never stops in the opener. It was finishing.

Canisius needs its shooters back

The Griffins made 18.2% of their threes at Penn State, and Vinny Sigona and Michael Wilson Jr. combined to miss all ten of their attempts. That number should not hold. Vinny Sigona shot 40.1% on 157 threes at East Texas A&M last season, and Clinton Efinda, the opener's most efficient scorer, hit 38.5% from deep at UNC Greensboro.

Michael Wilson Jr. is the other variable. He took a heavy share of possessions in the opener and shot 21.4% from the field. If his touches go to Efinda and Preist Ryan, Canisius looks more functional.

The defensive end is a bigger worry. Canisius allowed Penn State to make 69.6% of its twos, 289th of 303, and Brown's frontcourt will look to test that interior.

Fouls and giveaways decided the opener

Brown lost by four points in a game it largely controlled on the defensive glass, and the margin hid two habits. The Bears sent New Hampshire to the line constantly: an opponent free throw rate (attempts per shot from the field) of 71.1%, 299th of 303. Then Brown made just 50.0% of its own free throws.

Ball security was the other leak. Brown turned it over on 25.4% of possessions, 272nd. Reveno's first home win likely depends on cleaning up those two areas more than on any shooting spike.

Tempo is a quieter subplot. Canisius played at 73 possessions per 40 minutes at Penn State, while Brown's opener crawled along at 63. A slower game favors the team with the better defense, and right now that is Brown.

Key players

  • Jeremiah Jenkins (Brown): A returner who scored 17 points on a 70% effective field goal percentage in the opener.
  • Brady Loughlin (Brown): Played 37 minutes against New Hampshire and hit 3 of 8 threes for 12 points.
  • N'famara Dabo (Brown): Shot 75% from the field and pulled down 9 rebounds in the opener.
  • Clinton Efinda (Canisius): Led Canisius with 13 points at Penn State, hitting 2 of 5 threes.
  • Preist Ryan (Canisius): Posted 12 points and 8 rebounds on 55.6% shooting in his Canisius debut.
  • Vinny Sigona (Canisius): Handed out 4 assists in the opener and shot 40.1% from three last season.
