Maryland Eastern Shore vs Rhode Island prediction: Rhode Island's turnover-hunting defense awaits a rebuilt UMES backcourt
Maryland Eastern Shore brings a nearly all-new roster and one scorer who looks the part; the Rams' hands in passing lanes could decide how wide this gets.
- Rhode Island should control the game with defensive pressure while UMES leans heavily on Bobby Gardner to keep it from getting away.
- Gardner will face a Rhode Island defense that ranked 14th nationally in forced turnover rate last season.
- No line posted yet. UMES covered a 32.5-point spread at Wake Forest despite losing by 21.
A roster built from scratch
Cleo Hill Jr. turned over almost the entire Maryland Eastern Shore roster. Players on this season's team accounted for just 6.9% of last season's minutes, and Levi Beckwith is the lone returner from a 9-23 team. That makes last season's numbers close to meaningless for the Hawks.
The first look at the new group came Nov. 2 at Wake Forest, a team that finished 64th in opponent-adjusted net rating last season. UMES hung around until a 20-0 Wake run broke it open, and the final was 83-62. Newcomer Bobby Gardner was the story, scoring 30 points in his debut. He carried a 37.2% usage rate, meaning more than a third of UMES possessions ended with him shooting, drawing a foul or turning it over. Among the other players listed in the packet, Isaiah Griffin was next with 10 points.
The Hawks will have two more games to sort things out before Kingston: a trip to High Point on Wednesday and a home opener against Cheyney on Saturday.
Where possessions get lost
This is the matchup that should shape the margin. Rhode Island's defense under Archie Miller lived on takeaways last season, forcing turnovers on 21.1% of opponent possessions, 14th of 365. Its steal rate ranked 23rd.
UMES gave the ball away on 25.7% of its possessions at Wake Forest, which ranks 276th of 303 teams so far. A new backcourt still learning each other is exactly the group pressure defenses feast on.
One caution on the Rhody side: Tyler Cochran, who averaged 2.7 steals last season, is gone. The Rams return only 31.4% of last season's minutes, so the pressure has to come from different hands.
Rhody's shooting question
Rhode Island's offense was its weakness last season. The Rams took plenty of threes, with 43.5% of their shots coming from deep, but hit just 31.1% of them, 323rd nationally.
The returning and incoming pieces suggest a better mix. Jahmere Tripp made 41.5% of his threes last season, and he and guard Jonah Hinton were both named third-team preseason all-conference in the A-10. Dylan Williamson, a 6-foot-1 graduate guard from Towson, made 84 threes there last season.
The Rams may not need the perimeter at all. Wake Forest shot 67.6% on two-pointers against UMES, so driving lanes and post touches could be there all night.
Stakes on both benches
Rhode Island was picked 12th in the A-10 preseason poll, and Miller enters the final season of his five-year contract with plenty of doubt around whether he should have returned. Home nonconference wins are not optional for a team in that position. The Rams open tonight against Holy Cross and host Maine on Nov. 10 before this one, so they will have two games behind them by the time UMES arrives.
UMES was projected eighth in the MEAC. For the Hawks, this trip is about building cohesion and seeing whether Gardner's opener was a sign of things to come.
No spread or total has been posted yet. The Hawks' lone game went over its total and covered a huge number, a reminder that their scoring can stay respectable even in lopsided losses.

Numbers that matter
| UMES returning minutes | 6.9% | Nearly the whole roster is new, so last season's UMES numbers say little about this team. |
|---|---|---|
| URI forced turnover rate, last season | 21.1% | Ranked 14th nationally and the clearest edge Rhode Island carries into this game. |
| UMES turnover rate this season | 25.7% | Ranked 276th of 303 after the Wake Forest opener. |
| URI 3-point %, last season | 31.1% | Ranked 323rd, the offense's biggest problem a year ago. |
| UMES closing spread at Wake Forest | 32.5 | The Hawks covered it despite a 21-point loss. |
