Samford Bulldogs vs UNLV Rebels prediction: Samford's rebuilt shooters test UNLV's shaky opening-night perimeter defense

UNLV owns the possession game, but Northern Arizona's hot night from deep shows how a Samford team built on transfers could hang around in Las Vegas.

Quick take
  • UNLV should win the turnover and rebounding battles. Its perimeter defense is what could keep Samford close at the Thomas & Mack Center.
  • Cooper Noard and Samford's shooters against a UNLV defense that let its opener shoot 47.8% from three.
  • UNLV opened -12 in our feed and sits at -11. The Rebels failed to cover -20.75 in their opener, and that game went over.

Open looks in Las Vegas

UNLV's first regular-season test showed a crack in its defense. Northern Arizona, which ranked 312th in adjusted net efficiency, made 47.8% of its threes against the Rebels on Tuesday and took a halftime lead before UNLV pulled away. Saturday's 4 p.m. ET tip brings Samford to town for the first meeting between the programs, and the Bulldogs have spent the offseason restocking their shooting.

That opponent 3-point mark ranks 359th of 363 teams. Northern Arizona's effective field goal percentage, which counts a made three as 1.5 field goals, was 63.5%. It is one game, so read it as a warning light, not a verdict.

Samford built its identity on the three last season. It took 46.5% of its shots from deep, 39th in the country. The man who made that work, Jadin Booth, is gone after averaging 21.6 points. The replacement plan starts with Cooper Noard, a preseason all-SoCon pick who averaged 18.2 points at Cornell last season and made 37.6% of his threes. Noard went 1-of-4 from deep against Berry. If he finds his range on Saturday, UNLV's closeouts become the story.

Mack carries a thin rotation

UNLV returns just 23.3% of last season's minutes, and the rebuild is still missing a piece. AJ Storr, a transfer from Ole Miss, was still ineligible as of about Nov. 3. Josh Pastner said the program was waiting on a pending Texas court decision. Terrance Ford Jr. is listed with a concussion after a brief stint in the opener.

That puts the load on Sebastian Mack. He scored 31 against Northern Arizona and used 37.5% of UNLV's possessions while he was on the floor, after putting up 26 in the exhibition loss to BYU. He averaged 7.0 points a game last season, so this is a new role, and UNLV's offense depends heavily on him. Tyrin Jones, a preseason all-conference pick who missed the BYU exhibition, is back. He had 12 points and eight rebounds in the opener, and Jeremy Foumena added a double-double inside.

Extra possessions favor UNLV

UNLV's clearest edge is in the number of shots each team gets. The Rebels forced turnovers on 26.9% of Northern Arizona's possessions, a rate that ranks 42nd, and grabbed exactly half of their own misses, which ranks 17th.

Samford's best counters come from last season, and most of that roster has moved on. Those Bulldogs ranked ninth nationally at protecting the ball. But they almost never took it away, finishing 354th in forced turnover rate, and they ranked 335th on the offensive glass. Unless that changes, Samford will have to make its shots count because it won't get many second chances.

The Bulldogs have one new weapon inside. Will Shaver, slated to start at center, blocked four shots against Berry after playing a reserve role last season.

Where the line sits

The spread has moved a point toward Samford since our feed first saw it at -12, and it now sits at UNLV -11. The total has held at 156.5. UNLV's opener shows why some bettors want points against these Rebels: they closed as 20.75-point favorites over Northern Arizona, did not cover and gave up enough to send the game over.

Last season's final adjusted ratings put UNLV 104th in net efficiency and Samford 214th. Both rosters have turned over so much that those marks describe different teams, so Saturday's first look at UNLV's guards defending real shooters matters more than any preseason gap.
