Prairie View Panthers vs UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros prediction: Prairie View's pressure defense tests UTRGV's rebuilt, turnover-prone backcourt
Two nearly new rosters, two fast tempos, and one clear fault line: the Panthers take the ball away, and the Vaqueros have been giving it up.
| Spread | UT Rio Grande Valley -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 150.5 |
- Expect a fast, sloppy game in which Prairie View's steals keep it close and UTRGV's shot-blocking decides how many of them turn into points.
- Michael Eley against UTRGV's guards: the Hampton transfer leads the Panthers in scoring and ties for the lead in steals.
- UTRGV is an 8.5-point favorite with a 149.5 total, both unchanged since our feed first saw the game; both teams rank top 25 in pace.
Two programs starting over
Prairie View A&M won an NCAA Tournament game in March, beating Lehigh 67-55 in the First Four for the program's first win in the event. Almost none of that team is left. UT Rio Grande Valley hired Brandon Chambers in April and kept two players. Saturday in Edinburg is the first real look at two rosters assembled over the summer.
The Panthers bring back 4.6% of last season's minutes. The Vaqueros bring back 7.7%. That makes last season's numbers close to useless here. UTRGV finished last season 124th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), and Prairie View finished 308th. The market has made UTRGV the favorite, but neither team looks much like the one behind those ratings. Both are unbeaten so far, against soft early competition.
Steals against a loose handle
The clearest matchup in the early numbers is Prairie View's defense against UTRGV's ball security. The Panthers force turnovers on 28.0% of opponent possessions, 31st nationally. UTRGV has turned it over on 24.4% of its own possessions, 331st of 363.
Pressure is the part of Prairie View that survived the roster turnover. Byron Smith's team ranked 23rd in forced turnover rate last season too. Michael Eley and Micah Bell each average 2.5 steals. Eley had four of them in the opener against Paul Quinn.
The Panthers are careless themselves, turning it over at a rate that ranks 303rd. That points to a ragged game with lots of possessions changing hands, and to UTRGV's new guards, led by TCU transfer Jace Posey, needing to settle down quickly.
Rim attacks into a shot-blocking wall
Prairie View hardly shoots threes. Its 3-point attempt rate of 20.0% is the lowest of 363 Division I teams. The Panthers have made 48.0% of the few they take, but they score mostly by driving to the rim and getting to the line.
UTRGV is set up to meet that. The Vaqueros block 20.6% of opponent two-point attempts, 20th nationally. They also rarely foul: their opponent free throw rate ranks 26th.
The free throw line could matter late. UTRGV made 42.9% of its free throws in the opener, 361st of 363. Prairie View's 61.1% is not much better. In a close finish, neither team has shown it can protect a lead from the stripe.
Who carries the scoring
Eley has been the Panthers' engine, averaging 26.5 points with a usage rate of 28.6%. His shooting is the question. He has made five of eight threes so far after making 28.4% at Hampton last season. Alcorn State transfer Davian Williams adds 12.0 points off the bench. Davis Bynum averages 10.0 rebounds.
UTRGV spread its scoring in the opener. Caden Bell and B.B. Knight scored 14 points each, and Posey added 12 with seven rebounds. Posey and Oregon transfer Devon Pryor are the two newcomers with Power 4 experience. Knight went 2 of 8 from three, and UTRGV needs a better perimeter night.
Tempo, rest and the number
Both teams have played fast. Prairie View's pace of 82.3 possessions per 40 minutes ranks 14th, and UTRGV's ranks 21st. That supports a total set at 149.5, which has not moved since our feed first saw the game. The spread has held at UTRGV -8.5 as well.
The schedule favors the hosts. UTRGV has had five days off, while Prairie View plays on two days' rest. The Vaqueros are 3-1 all-time against the Panthers. The last meeting came in Edinburg in 2018, a 70-57 UTRGV win.
What to watch: - UTRGV's turnover count in the first 10 minutes. - Whether Eley gets to the rim against the Vaqueros' shot-blockers. - Free throws in the final four minutes.
