Prairie View A&M vs Vanderbilt prediction: Prairie View's ball-hawking new guards test Vanderbilt's sloppy opening-night handle

Vanderbilt holds the size edge and the stronger last-season ratings, so a rebuilt Prairie View roster's best hope is to steal possessions before the Commodores' new pieces settle in.

Quick take
  • Vanderbilt should control this at home with size and shot-making; the margin depends on how many possessions Prairie View's guards can steal.
  • Prairie View's pressure against Vanderbilt's ball security: the Commodores turned it over on 20.0% of possessions in their opener.
  • No line is posted yet. Vanderbilt covered a 36-point spread against Bellarmine, a team ranked 280th in adjusted net efficiency last season.

Turnovers are Prairie View's way in

Prairie View A&M opened with an 86-65 home win over Paul Quinn, and the defense did the loudest work. The Panthers forced turnovers on 37.1% of possessions (turnover rate measures giveaways per 100 possessions), second in the country. Their steal rate of 20.0% ranked 19th.

The opponent was Paul Quinn, so treat those figures as a sketch. Still, this is a Byron Smith habit. He is in his 10th season, and last season's Panthers forced turnovers at a 20.7% clip, 23rd nationally.

Vanderbilt is the side worth watching here. The Commodores gave the ball away on 20.0% of their possessions against Bellarmine, 236th nationally. Last season's group protected it at 14.4%, 33rd, but most of that backcourt is gone. Michael Eley had four steals in the opener, and every guard in Prairie View's top six recorded at least two. If Vanderbilt's new ball handlers are careless again, the Panthers can keep this within shouting distance for a half.

Two rosters built from scratch

Prairie View won the SWAC Tournament title in March and then lost nearly everyone. Players on this roster account for 4.6% of last season's minutes, so last season's team numbers say little about this group. Elijah Mitchell is the only holdover, and he scored 14 off the bench in the opener.

The new scoring comes from transfers. Eley, who came over from Hampton, poured in 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting with a 33.1% usage rate, meaning a third of the Panthers' possessions ended with him. Davian Williams, from Alcorn State, added 14 points and five assists. A preseason preview projects Prairie View sixth in the SWAC.

Vanderbilt retooled too, returning 25.4% of its minutes, but it kept its engine. Tyler Tanner averaged 19.5 points last season and opened with 20 points, six assists and four steals. T.O. Barrett, the Missouri transfer, is back after missing most of the preseason and handed out four assists against Bellarmine. Freshman guard Gabe Nesmith is the absence that matters. Mark Byington ruled him out before the opener, and Byington reportedly indicated the injury could cost him the season; no return timetable has been given.

Size and the glass

Vanderbilt's minutes-weighted height is 77.9 inches, against 76.0 for Prairie View. That gap showed up immediately. The Commodores grabbed 44.0% of their own misses against Bellarmine (offensive rebound rate), 54th nationally. Sebastian Williams-Adams, the Auburn transfer, pulled nine rebounds, and Nebraska transfer Berke Buyuktuncel went 5-for-5 from the floor.

Prairie View's guard-heavy rotation rebounded only 23.1% of its own misses against Paul Quinn, 295th. Its offense also barely leans on the three. Threes made up 25.0% of its attempts, 337th, so the Panthers will have to score inside against a bigger front line. Vanderbilt shot 72.2% on twos in its opener, 21st in the country.

What the ratings and the opener say

By last season's final adjusted efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), Vanderbilt ranked 16th in net rating and Prairie View ranked 308th. The Commodores, No. 24 in the AP poll, finished last season 27-9 with a run to the NCAA Round of 32.

The Bellarmine game is the useful comparison. Vanderbilt won 93-47, led 44-17 at halftime and allowed 47 points, 19th nationally in points allowed. That covered a 36-point spread and went under a total of 158.5. Both teams come in with 11 days of rest, so neither has a fatigue excuse. When the line arrives, the question is whether Prairie View's pressure can produce enough extra possessions to slow the kind of first-half avalanche Bellarmine absorbed.

Key players
