North Carolina Central Eagles vs Longwood Lancers prediction: Longwood's ball hawks test NC Central's rebuilt, turnover-prone backcourt

North Carolina Central returns almost nobody from last season and coughed it up at an alarming rate in its opener, which hands Longwood's pressure defense the clearest path to a double-digit win.

Quick take
  • Longwood should turn Eagle turnovers into a fast, lopsided game, with NC Central's 3-point shooting the main thing keeping the margin in check.
  • Longwood's guards against Darius Kane and Trey Brown: can a backcourt of newcomers hold onto the ball against active hands?
  • Longwood is favored by 11.5, unchanged from the first line seen; NC Central turned it over on 25.7% of possessions at Georgia.

Turnovers set the margin

North Carolina Central is a team of strangers, and it played like one at Georgia. The Eagles gave the ball away on 25.7% of their possessions in a 78-62 loss, a turnover rate that ranks 344th nationally. That is the opening Longwood will attack Saturday afternoon in Farmville.

The Lancers have forced turnovers on 21.8% of opponent possessions through two games. Pressure is also a habit under second-year coach Ronnie Thomas. Last season Longwood ranked 13th in the country in forced turnover rate.

The Eagles' ball handling runs through Darius Kane, who dished seven assists in the opener but made just 16.7% of his shots. At the other end Longwood has been careful, turning it over on 13.9% of its trips. If that gap holds, the Lancers get more shots, and more of them in the open floor.

A program starting over

LeVelle Moton's roster returns 3.1% of last season's minutes. Last season's biggest departure, Gage Lattimore, is now at James Madison after averaging 16.6 points. That makes last season's NC Central numbers close to useless here; this is a different team wearing the same jerseys.

Longwood turned over its roster too, but less drastically. The Lancers return 26.7% of last season's minutes, including Alphonzo Billups III and Jaylen Benard, and added transfers MJ Williams and TJ Robinson. Billups and Williams were both named second-team preseason All-Big South, and Longwood was picked fourth in the league's coaches' poll. No injury news has surfaced for either team.

Sanon and the Eagles' shot diet

NC Central's best weapon at Georgia was the one it used least. The Eagles made 46.7% of their threes, 19th nationally, but only 24.6% of their shots came from deep. Cristian Sanon carried that load, going 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and leading all scorers with 19 points.

Inside, the picture was grim. The Eagles made 34.8% of their twos against the Bulldogs, and their size has not yet translated. Freshman Duor Duor, a 6-11 forward, started the opener, and NC Central is the taller team by minutes-weighted height. If the Eagles can turn that length into finishes around the rim against a Longwood team that rarely blocks shots, they have a way to keep pace. If not, they need Sanon to stay hot from deep.

Pace, free throws and the number

Longwood is favored by 11.5, with a total of 148.5, and neither has moved since our feed first saw the game. Both teams have covered their only lined games. Longwood lost 82-73 at Saint Joseph's as an 11.5-point underdog, a game that went over. NC Central covered a 40-point spread at Georgia while the game stayed under.

Tempo leans toward points. Longwood's two games, one of them a 123-67 romp over Pfeiffer, have averaged 82.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 13th of 364. Turnovers feed that pace.

One odd wrinkle could matter late: Longwood has made just 46.2% of its free throws, 356th nationally. A team that shaky at the line can struggle to close out a big lead.

What to watch - Eagle turnovers in the first 10 minutes - How many threes Sanon gets up - Whether Duor and the Eagles' size produce two-point baskets - Longwood's free throws if the margin sits near the number late
