North Carolina A&T Aggies vs Ohio Bobcats prediction: Ohio's three-point flood greets a nearly brand-new North Carolina A&T
The Bobcats' home opener puts a team that knows exactly what it wants to shoot against an Aggies roster rebuilt almost from scratch.
| Spread | Ohio -14.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 161.25 |
- Ohio's guards should control the shape of this game from deep, while A&T searches for chemistry with almost no returning minutes.
- Kolton Mitchell's three-point volume against an Aggies perimeter defense built from transfers and newcomers.
- Ohio is favored by 14.5 with a 161.25 total, with the spread up from 12.5 since Nov. 6; A&T returns just 13.0% of last season's minutes.
Ohio lets it fly
Ohio opened its season by taking most of its shots from behind the arc, and it worked. North Carolina A&T arrives in Athens having replaced nearly its entire rotation. A team that already knows its identity against one still discovering its own frames the Bobcats' first home game.
In the 86-77 win at South Alabama, 66.7% of Ohio's field goal attempts were threes, the highest 3-point attempt rate in Division I so far. It wasn't empty volume. The Bobcats made 42.1% of them.
Kolton Mitchell, the transfer from Idaho, hit seven threes on his way to 21 points. Jackson Paveletzke added 20 and ran the offense. One game proves little about a shot diet, but Mitchell's history backs it up: he took 201 threes at Idaho last season and made 36.3% of them.
A roster built from scratch
Monté Ross's Aggies return just 13.0% of last season's minutes, which makes their 2025-26 team numbers a weak guide to this group. The biggest loss is Lewis Walker, who averaged 18.9 points and now plays at UCF. Trent Middleton Jr. left for Louisiana and Zamoku Weluche-Ume for Old Dominion.
The rebuild runs through two guard transfers. Shane Lancaster made 41.7% of his threes at Alcorn State last season. Ponce James averaged 13.6 points at Delaware State. Center Will Felton is the most useful returner, a 69.6% shooter from the field last season in a reserve role.
The Aggies are 0-1, with the loss coming at home against Warren Wilson on Nov. 3. A Nov. 5 injury listing had a C. Turnbull out two to three weeks with a foot injury and a J. Allen questionable with a foot injury. Neither name appears on A&T's published roster, so both remain unconfirmed. Ohio has no injuries listed.
Can the Aggies reach the line
If one trait survives the turnover, it could be how A&T attacked. Last season the Aggies posted a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 45.1%, third in the country.
Ohio's defense gave that away at South Alabama, allowing an opponent free throw rate of 51.9%, which ranks 329th. The Bobcats did finish possessions, though. Their defensive rebound rate of 84.4% ranks 13th nationally, which cuts off second chances.
The caveat is personnel. Walker, an 86.2% free throw shooter, drove much of last season's foul-drawing. James's line suggests a guard who can convert when he gets there, but A&T's new pieces have not shown it together against Division I competition.
Where the number sits
Ohio is favored by 14.5, and the total sits at 161.25. The line has moved from Ohio -12.5 to Ohio -14.5 since it first appeared on Nov. 6, while the total has barely budged from 161, and the Bobcats are -1150 on the moneyline.
Ohio covered in its opener as a slight underdog, and that game cleared a closing total of 154.75. Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Ohio 222nd in net efficiency and A&T 274th. Neither defense was good, which helps explain a total this high.
The Bobcats were picked fifth in the MAC preseason coaches poll. Jeff Boals has a backcourt of Paveletzke, Mitchell and Kyler D'Augustino, and the question is whether a rebuilt A&T can stay close enough for long enough.
