Mount Saint Mary (NY) vs Army prediction: Army's three-point habit gets a home tune-up after Duke

Days after opening at Duke, the Black Knights host a non-Division I Newburgh neighbor and get a first look at whether last season's shoot-first identity still fits.

Quick take
  • Army should control a lopsided home game against a non-Division I visitor, much as it did in a 101-48 win over Mount Saint Mary in 2024.
  • Watch Army's perimeter volume: last season it ranked 3rd nationally in 3-point attempt rate but made only 32.4% of its threes.
  • No spread or total has been posted; Army's adjusted net efficiency ranked 340th of 365 by last season's final numbers.

A quick turnaround from Durham

Army opens its season at Duke on Nov. 2, then is set to come home to Christl Arena for this one. That is a hard first week for a program picked last in the 10-team Patriot League coaches' poll with 11 points. Kevin Kuwik enters his fourth season after an 11-21 finish that included a 5-13 Patriot League record.

Mount Saint Mary College, from Newburgh, is not a Division I program, and no news surfaced about its roster or coaching. The last meeting set the tone: Army won 101-48 at Christl Arena in November 2024, setting program records for three-pointers made and assists.

Lots of threes, uneven aim

Last season Army lived behind the arc. Its 3-point attempt rate of 53.4% (share of shots taken from three) ranked 3rd of 365, but it made just 32.4% of those tries, 268th nationally. The ball moved well, with an assist rate of 59.7% ranking 38th. Against an overmatched opponent, that volume tends to turn into a blowout, as it did in 2024.

The flip side showed up at the line. Army's free throw rate, free throws attempted per field goal attempt, was 25.6%, 359th in the country, a natural cost of a jump-shooting team.

The defensive questions linger

Army's defense ranked 343rd in adjusted efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) by last season's final numbers. Rim protection was nearly absent, with a block rate of 4.8% ranking 360th. The one strength was cleaning the glass: a 72.7% defensive rebound rate ranked 60th.

Size could change that picture. The roster lists Parker Henderson as a 7'0", 275-pound freshman center from Hobbs, N.M. Army has made no announcements about transfers or projected starters, so how much the frontcourt has changed remains unclear.

Numbers that matter

Army 3-point attempt rate (last season)53.4%Ranked 3rd of 365, the core of Army's offensive identity.
Army 3-point % (last season)32.4%Ranked 268th, so the volume didn't always pay off against Division I opponents.
Army block rate (last season)4.8%Ranked 360th, a reason the listed 7'0" freshman draws interest.
