Morgan St Bears vs Niagara Purple Eagles prediction: Niagara is favored, but 34 percent turnovers won't beat Morgan State

The Purple Eagles' opener against West Virginia was a ball-security disaster, and a rebuilt Morgan State backcourt led by Alfred Worrell Jr. arrives unbeaten to test whether it was a one-night problem.

Quick take
  • Two rebuilt rosters, very little data: Niagara's lopsided loss to West Virginia and Morgan State's routs of Cheyney and Virginia-Lynchburg.
  • Niagara's guards holding onto the ball against Morgan State's pressure, with Alfred Worrell Jr. waiting to punish every giveaway.
  • Niagara is a 3.5-point favorite with a 150.5 total, unchanged since our feed first saw it; Niagara turned it over on 34.3% of possessions in its opener.

Niagara has to stop giving it away

Niagara's opener told a blunt story. West Virginia won 91-46, and the Purple Eagles turned the ball over on 34.3% of their possessions (turnover rate, giveaways per 100 possessions), 362nd of 363 Division I teams. They also grabbed none of their own misses and barely reached the free-throw line. A team that shoots 40.0% from three in that game can survive a lot, but not a third of its trips ending without a shot.

The question is how much of that was West Virginia, a team that finished 54th in adjusted net rating, and how much is Niagara. Last season's Purple Eagles weren't careful either: their turnover rate ranked 308th. That roster is almost entirely gone, though, so the honest answer is that nobody knows yet.

Morgan State's defense won't settle it cleanly. The Bears have forced turnovers at a middling clip through two games (153rd of 363), and last season their steal rate ranked 349th. This isn't a pressing team by history. Niagara's guards should get a calmer night than they had against West Virginia, which is exactly why a repeat would be so damning.

Two programs starting over

Both coaches are in their 8th season, and both are working with mostly new rosters. Niagara returns just 10.2% of last season's minutes, and that 8-22 team is a weak guide to this one. Greg Paulus rebuilt with transfers: Logan Woods, from Wright State, led the opener with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and Cole Farrell started all 32 of his games at Long Beach State last season. Trenton Walters is the lone real returner after averaging 7.2 points last season.

Morgan State brings back 23.2% of its minutes, but it kept the most important piece. Alfred Worrell Jr. averaged 17.4 points last season and has opened with 23.5 per game while making 9 of 20 threes. His usage rate of 33.4% says the offense runs through him. Keith Richard, a new arrival, is setting the table at 5.5 assists per game, and forward Ibrahima Traore is blocking 3.0 shots a night. The Bears were picked second in the MEAC preseason poll, and they beat Niagara 81-73 at home last December, though few players from either side of that game remain.

A free-throw gap to watch

Last season's numbers carry a caution label here, but the style signals are stark. Morgan State lived at the line, ranking 30th in free-throw rate (free-throw attempts per shot attempt), and also put opponents there constantly, ranking 362nd in opponent free-throw rate. Niagara was the opposite, 355th at drawing fouls.

If the new Bears keep fouling, Niagara's transfers get free points they rarely earned last season. If Morgan State keeps attacking, its early 57.8% free-throw shooting becomes a concern in a game the market expects to be close.

Pace and the 150.5 total

Morgan State has played fast so far (81.5 possessions per 40 minutes, 18th), but only through two games. Last season the Bears ranked 56th in pace, while Niagara ranked 359th, one of the slowest teams in the country. Niagara's opener ran at a more ordinary 71 possessions per 40 minutes, and that game stayed under a closing total of 141.75.

The total of 150.5 assumes Morgan State sets the tempo. Niagara's best path to a cover is probably the opposite: fewer possessions, fewer turnovers and a game decided late. Niagara also has the rest edge, five days against Morgan State's three, along with its home floor.
