Morehead St Eagles vs Louisville Cardinals prediction: Louisville's turnover pressure carries a 37.5-point burden against Morehead State
No. 11 Louisville is a brand-new team whose jump shot hasn't arrived yet, so steals and points at the rim will have to build a margin this large.
| Spread | Louisville -37.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 151.75 |
- Louisville should control possessions with pressure and size. The cover depends on whether its cold perimeter shooting warms up.
- Watch Louisville's ball pressure against a Morehead team that turned it over on 16.8% of possessions through two games.
- Louisville sits at -37.5, up from -36.5. It failed to cover -30.25 in its opener.
A new team, an old question
No. 11 Louisville brings back 11.4% of last season's minutes, so every early game works as a scouting report on a roster built almost from scratch. Saturday's noon tip at the KFC Yum! Center isn't really about who wins. The question is whether a team still finding its jump shot can cover a spread of 37.5 points against Morehead State.
Steals do the heavy lifting
Louisville's clearest strength in its 84-70 opener against Chattanooga came on defense. The Cardinals forced turnovers on 25.0% of possessions (turnover rate counts giveaways per 100 possessions), which ranks 63rd nationally. Adrian Wooley and Flory Bidunga combined for seven steals.
Morehead State gave the ball away on 16.8% of its possessions through two games, 157th in the country. The Eagles don't take it back the other way: they force turnovers at a 12.6% rate, 338th of 363. That gap means Louisville's guards should get clean trips while the Eagles have to fight for theirs. A blowout this big usually needs extra possessions, and live-ball steals that become layups are the likeliest source.
A jumper that hasn't arrived
Louisville still shoots like a Pat Kelsey team. More than half its shots against Chattanooga came from three, but it made just 25.7% of them, 301st nationally. Jackson Shelstad went 3 of 12. Ryan Conwell and Isaac McKneely, the shooters who powered last season's offense, are gone.
The Cardinals were far better inside. They hit 63.6% of their twos, and Bidunga posted 16 points in 27 minutes. Free throws are the other worry for anyone backing the margin: Louisville made 57.7% at the line, 322nd.
Morehead State will shoot threes too, taking 48.1% of its shots from deep. Clayton Parker is 4-for-4 from three, while Justin Payne is 0-for-10. A roster leaning that hard on threes can swing by double digits on its own luck.
Holes on both rosters
Louisville's depth is already thinner than planned. De'Shayne Montgomery is out about six weeks with a foot problem, which the team announced Nov. 2. Gabe Dynes was listed Oct. 27 as missing at least four months after shoulder surgery.
Seth Trimble and LJ Wells are eligible under a temporary injunction granted Oct. 16, and that ruling remains subject to further court developments. No newer word on their status has come out. Trimble played against Chattanooga and had 13 points.
Morehead State also turned over its roster. It returns 26.2% of last season's minutes and lost Jon Carroll to Drake. The Eagles were picked to tie for third in the OVC, and their opener was a lopsided loss at Western Kentucky. Their blowout of Virginia-Lynchburg says little about how they handle an ACC frontcourt.
The number keeps climbing
The spread has moved toward Louisville since our feed first saw it at -36.5, and the total has ticked up to 151.75. Both teams went under in their only lined games.
The opener showed the risk in laying this many points. Louisville led Chattanooga 56-35 at halftime, then didn't come close to its spread. Last season's final adjusted ratings had Louisville 17th in net efficiency and Morehead State 282nd, but with so few players back on either side, that gap is a rough guide at best.

Numbers that matter
| Spread | -37.5 | Louisville's line has grown from -36.5 since our feed first recorded it. |
|---|---|---|
| Louisville forced turnover rate | 25.0% | Ranks 63rd and is the likeliest engine for a margin this large. |
| Louisville 3-point % | 25.7% | Ranks 301st on a high volume of attempts, the biggest drag on a cover. |
| Louisville returning minutes | 11.4% | Makes last season's top-20 ratings a weak guide to this team. |
| Morehead State forced turnover rate | 12.6% | Ranks 338th, so the Eagles are unlikely to steal extra possessions back. |
