Mercer Bears vs Davidson Wildcats prediction: Mercer's rebuilt roster runs into Davidson's hot-shooting home opener
Davidson opens Belk Arena after a sharp road win, while a Mercer team with almost no returning minutes plays on two days' rest after a rout at Virginia Tech.
| Spread | Davidson -11.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 147.75 |
- Davidson likely slows the game and leans on its shooters while Mercer, short on rest, needs offensive rebounds and free throws to stay close.
- Watch Sam Brown and Nick Janowski against a Mercer perimeter still learning to defend together.
- Davidson is -11.5, up from -10 when our feed first saw it; Mercer returns just 24.2% of last season's minutes.
Mercer starts over on the road
Mercer had its best season in more than a decade in 2025-26, its most wins since 2013-14, and then watched nearly all of that team leave. Players on this season's roster logged just 24.2% of last season's minutes. Baraka Okojie, who averaged 19.7 points, went to George Mason, and center Armani Mighty went to Pittsburgh. Third-year coach Ryan Ridder rebuilt with ten transfers.
That makes last season's Mercer numbers a weak guide. The new group opened with a 90-53 home win over Reinhardt, then lost 96-67 at Virginia Tech in a game that was over by halftime. Saturday's game comes two days later, the second stop in a run of five straight road games.
Davidson's shooters set the terms
Davidson also lost four guards to transfer, including Parker Friedrichsen to Washington and Roberts Blums to Penn State. Its opener suggested Matt McKillop's fourth team can still shoot. The Wildcats won 76-61 at Washington State as a 2.5-point underdog and made 52.2% of their threes, third in the country so far.
Sam Brown hit 6 of 10 from deep for 22 points, a jolt from a guard who shot 27.2% from three last season. Nick Janowski, a transfer from St. Thomas-Minnesota, scored 21 in his debut, and Ian Platteeuw came close to a triple-double. One road game can't say whether Brown's night was a breakout or an outlier, but Mercer has to respect it from the opening tip.
Where Mercer can claw back
Mercer's path to staying within the number runs through the glass and the foul line. The Bears have grabbed 37.5% of their own misses, while Davidson has rebounded only 67.4% of its opponents' misses. With Mighty gone, Brady Shoulders, a preseason all-conference pick, has carried much of Mercer's rebounding.
Mercer also gets to the line, with a free throw rate (free throw attempts per shot) of 40.5%. Davidson held Washington State to a 16.2% rate, 17th nationally, so those trips will be harder to come by. Ball security is the bigger worry: Mercer ranks 304th in turnover rate, though Davidson rarely forces turnovers. If the game tightens late, Davidson's free throw shooting is the soft spot. The Wildcats made 65.4% last season, 359th of 365.
Slow floor, big number
Davidson plays slowly. Its pace in the opener was 66 possessions per 40 minutes, 322nd in the country, and Mercer prefers a faster game. Fewer possessions usually make a double-digit spread harder to cover, yet the market has moved toward Davidson anyway. The Wildcats opened at -10 in our feed and now sit at -11.5.
The total has climbed to 148.5 from 146.5, a bet that Davidson's shooting and Mercer's porous early defense outweigh the slow tempo. Davidson went under its total at Washington State. Mercer went over at Virginia Tech, but only because the Hokies ran away from them.
