Maine vs Sacred Heart prediction: Sacred Heart's rebuilt shooting roster tests Maine's stingy perimeter defense

The Pioneers bring back almost none of last season's minutes but keep their three-point identity, and Maine guarded the arc as well as almost anyone in the country.

Quick take
  • Expect Maine to lean on its defense and its pressure, but its offense was among the worst in Division I last season.
  • Sacred Heart's new shooters, led by Quinnipiac transfer Samson Reilly, against a Maine defense that held opponents to 29.6% from three last season.
  • No line was posted as of Oct. 18. Maine's offense ranked 361st of 365 last season.

A Pioneers roster built from scratch

Anthony Latina enters his 14th season at Sacred Heart with a roster he barely recognizes. Players on this season's team accounted for only 16.0% of last season's minutes and 13.5% of its points. The core that went 14-19 is gone, including Nyle Ralph-Beyer, the team's leading scorer at 14.3 points a game, and Yann Farell, who made 41.1% of his threes.

That makes last season's team numbers a weak guide. The Pioneers finished with an adjusted net efficiency of -12.7, 302nd nationally (adjusted efficiency is points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions, corrected for opponents). Those numbers belong to players who have left. What carries over is Latina's system, and the opener in the America East-Metro Challenge at the Pitt Center is the first look at who runs it.

Volume shooting against a wall

Sacred Heart lived behind the arc last season. Half its field goal attempts were threes, a 50.7% rate that ranked 12th in the country. Maine was built to punish that. The Black Bears held opponents to 29.6% from three, sixth-best in Division I.

The Pioneers' best bet to keep firing is Samson Reilly, who made 48.1% of his 77 attempts off the bench at Quinnipiac. Jaden Slaughter, the most experienced returner, made 35.5% in limited volume. Indiana State transfer Jo Van Buggenhout and returning forward Abdou Yadd both shot under 30% from deep last season. If the new shooters can't find space against Maine's perimeter defense, Sacred Heart has no obvious second plan.

Maine still has to score

The Black Bears' problem last season was simple: they couldn't put the ball in the basket. Their offensive efficiency of 96.1 points per 100 possessions ranked 361st. They shot 64.1% from the free-throw line, 364th, and grabbed 19.8% of their own misses, also 364th. That added up to an 8-24 season that ended with a 60-58 loss at NJIT in the America East quarterfinals.

Help may be coming. Forward Killian Gribben and guard Darius Lopes missed all of last season with lower-body injuries and are on pace to be ready for this season. Coaches still picked Chris Markwood's team eighth of nine in the America East preseason poll, a sign few expect a dramatic offensive turnaround.

The turnover battle

Maine's most reliable weapon was its pressure. The Black Bears forced turnovers on 19.9% of opponent possessions last season, 42nd nationally. Sacred Heart gave the ball away on 17.7% of its trips, 251st, and that was with a different backcourt handling it.

A new backcourt in its first game against an active defense is where Maine can steal easy points it otherwise struggles to create. The reverse matters too: Maine was careless with the ball itself, but the Pioneers rarely forced mistakes last season. Whichever side wins the live-ball turnover count likely controls a game with few possessions to spare.
