Quick take
  • Montana State wants a fast, three-heavy game at home. Long Beach State will try to shorten it, as it did at Utah, and keep it close late.
  • Montana State's shooters against a Beach defense that held Utah to 29.4% from three but gave up 61.8% inside the arc.
  • Montana State is -10.5, unchanged since our feed first saw it. Long Beach State covered +19.5 at Utah in its opener.

A roster built from scratch

Almost nothing about last season's Long Beach State team is still in the building. The Beach return just 5.0% of last season's minutes and carry 13 newcomers, so the 10-22 record from 2025-26 is a weak guide to the team taking the floor in Bozeman.

The early evidence is mixed. Long Beach State lost a shorthanded exhibition at San Diego State, 92-67. Then it went to Utah and led 40-28 at halftime before falling 66-63, covering easily as a 19.5-point underdog. Utah ranks 122nd in our opponent-adjusted net rating, a respectable test.

The striking part was the tempo. Long Beach State played at 65 possessions per 40 minutes, 340th of 364, after ranking 53rd in pace last season. Chris Acker, in his third year, appears to have built a slower, grind-it-out team. Fewer possessions mean fewer chances for a better team to pull away, which is exactly how an underdog stays inside a double-digit number.

The Bobcats live behind the arc

Montana State took 54.8% of its shots from three at Colorado State, 15th-highest in the country. That's not a fluke of one night: last season the Bobcats ranked 28th nationally at 37.1% from deep, and they return 66.9% of their minutes.

The shooting came from both the starting lineup and the bench in the opener. Jeremiah Davis scored 17 on 3-of-6 from three, and Howie Keene added 15 in reserve on 4-of-6. Jed Miller, a preseason all-conference pick, made 40.6% of his threes last season on heavy volume.

Long Beach State's opening-night defense held Utah to 29.4% from three, but that came with a cost elsewhere. The Beach also force turnovers, posting a 23.1% forced turnover rate (opponent turnovers per 100 possessions) at Utah. Montana State's 15.1% turnover rate in its opener suggests it can handle that pressure.

Neither defense owns the paint

Both teams got carved up inside in their openers. Utah made 61.8% of its twos against Long Beach State, 324th nationally. Colorado State did even better against Montana State, hitting 62.9%, which ranks 329th.

Montana State's problem is a lack of rim protection: its block rate of 2.9% ranks 348th. That's an opening for Noah Amenhauser, the 7-2 captain who is the tallest player in Long Beach State history. He made 57.7% of his shots at Oregon State last season.

The Beach need that interior outlet, because their own two-point shooting was poor at Utah: 39.3%, 337th. Neither team crashes the offensive glass, either. Long Beach State's 16.2% offensive rebound rate ranks 357th, so second chances won't bail out a cold shooting night.

A home opener and a steady number

Montana State returns to Worthington Arena for the first time in eight months, carrying the expectations of a Big Sky favorite. The Bobcats drew 19 of 32 first-place votes in the league's media poll, the first time Matt Logie's program has been picked first.

The series has been tight lately. Long Beach State won 75-69 in Bozeman in 2023, and Montana State won 78-72 in Long Beach last season.

The market hasn't budged on the side: Montana State is -10.5, the same number our feed first recorded. The total dipped from 147.5 to 146.5. Both teams covered as underdogs in their openers. If this one is close late, watch the free-throw line. Long Beach State made just 61.1% of its free throws at Utah, 289th nationally.

No injury or availability news has surfaced for either team, and neither side has confirmed starters. Tip is 1 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
