Lafayette Leopards vs Saint Joseph's Hawks prediction: Glover-Toscano and the Hawks aim at Lafayette's open three-point line
Lafayette's rebuilt roster has let opponents fire away from deep, and Saint Joseph's has a preseason all-conference guard ready to take the invitation.
| Spread | Saint Joseph's -16.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 147.5 |
- Saint Joseph's should control the paint and the arc early; Lafayette needs Cooper Kesler's shooting to keep a big number within reach.
- Jaiden Glover-Toscano against a Lafayette defense allowing opponents 38.4% from three, 317th nationally.
- Saint Joseph's is a 17.5-point favorite, unchanged since our feed first saw it; Lafayette lost by 36 at Butler as a 19.5-point underdog.
An invitation from deep
Saint Joseph's has beaten Lafayette at Hagan Arena in both of their last two meetings, 81-60 in 2023 and 85-76 last November. The rematch arrives with both rosters remade, and the early film points to one place where this game could get away from the Leopards: the three-point line.
Lafayette's opponents are taking 58.9% of their shots from deep, the seventh-highest share in Division I. They are making 38.4% of them, which ranks 317th. Butler exposed it on Nov. 2, building a 54-34 halftime lead on the way to a 96-60 rout.
That is the wrong profile to bring against Jaiden Glover-Toscano. The junior guard, a preseason first-team All-Atlantic 10 pick, opened with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting against Longwood, including 3 of 5 from three. Last season he hit 90 threes. Freshman BJ Ranson added 17 off the bench in the opener and took six threes in 24 minutes.
Lafayette starts almost from scratch
The Leopards went 11-21 last season and finished 318th in adjusted net efficiency, a measure of points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents. This roster carries little of that team forward: players back from last season logged just 25.4% of its minutes. Caleb Williams, the leading scorer, is now at Jacksonville.
Mike McGarvey's rebuilt group leans on newcomers. Cooper Kesler has been the bright spot, hitting 7 of 12 threes, including a 25-point night in a 104-67 home win over Kings (PA). Guard Beckett Currie has carried a heavy load without the results, shooting 20% from deep after an 0-for-6 night at Butler. Shareef Jackson, a returning starter from Roman, is the inside anchor and scored 14 against the Bulldogs.
The Leopards have made a style switch too. Last season they played at one of the slowest paces in the country; through two games they average 76 possessions per 40 minutes, the same as Saint Joseph's.
Sean Logan changes the paint
Saint Joseph's lost a lot as well. Derek Simpson and Justice Ajogbor graduated, and only 36.7% of last season's minutes returned. Steve Donahue's second Hawks team still looks built around defense, the same identity that ranked 72nd in adjusted defensive efficiency last season and fueled a run to the A-10 semifinals.
The new rim protector is Sean Logan, a 6-10 graduate transfer from Davidson and preseason all-defensive pick. He blocked six shots and handed out seven assists against Longwood, and the Hawks blocked 28.6% of opponent two-point attempts, fifth nationally. Jackson and Jasraj Gill do most of Lafayette's work inside, so Logan's presence could push the Leopards toward even more jumpers.
The Hawks' weakness is the line. They got there often against Longwood, a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 49.2%, but made just 58.1%, 315th nationally. Logan went 14.3% at the stripe. Lafayette has not fouled much, which may limit that problem.
What the number says
Saint Joseph's is favored by 17.5 with a total of 146.5, and neither has moved since the first line our feed recorded this morning. Both teams failed to cover their lined openers: the Hawks beat Longwood 82-73 as 11.5-point favorites, and Lafayette lost to Butler by 36 as a 19.5-point underdog. Both of those games went over.
The spread question is ball security against pressure. Saint Joseph's turned it over on just 11.8% of possessions in its opener, 37th nationally. Lafayette has forced turnovers on 24.3%, 70th, much of it against Kings. If the Hawks protect the ball the way they did against Longwood, the Leopards lose their best route to extra possessions.
- Lafayette's three-point defense in the first 10 minutes
- Logan's minutes and whether Jackson can score over him
- Saint Joseph's free throw shooting if the margin tightens late
