Kansas City vs George Mason prediction: Kansas City's 20-minute problem faces George Mason's suffocating new defense
Mark Turgeon's rebuilt Roos led Creighton at halftime and then came apart, and George Mason's defense in its opener looked built to make 40 minutes feel longer.
- George Mason's length, glass work and ball security should grind on a Kansas City roster that turned the ball over constantly in its opener.
- Kansas City's ball handlers, led by Jaylen Smith, against a Mason defense that held UMBC to a 33.3% effective field goal rate.
- No line is posted yet. Both teams covered their openers and both went under, Kansas City as a 27.5-point underdog at Creighton.
One good half at Creighton
Kansas City's season opened with a jolt of hope. The Roos took a 39-33 halftime lead at Creighton in Mark Turgeon's first game, then got outscored 43-22 over the final 20 minutes and lost 76-61. They still covered as 27.5-point underdogs, which tells you how little the market expected.
The giveaway was ball security. Kansas City turned it over on 30.6% of its possessions, 293rd of 303 teams with games played. Turnover rate is the share of trips that end without a shot, and nearly a third is a number no offense survives for long. The shooting itself was fine: a 54.8% effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times), 124th nationally, built on 60.0% inside the arc.
This is a roster with no history together. Kansas City returns 0.0% of last season's minutes, so the 4-27 record and last season's adjusted net rating, 356th of 365, describe a different team. Turgeon arrived after 10 seasons at Maryland, and the core is transfers: Smith from East Tennessee State, Sebastian Hartmann from Chattanooga, Carl Daughtery Jr. from UC Davis and Assane Diop from San Diego.
Mason's rebuilt defense bites early
George Mason turned over its roster too, returning 15.0% of last season's minutes, but the Patriots brought in proven production and were picked fourth in the Atlantic 10. Their opener was an 82-54 win over UMBC, an opponent rated 200th in adjusted net efficiency.
The defense did the damage. UMBC posted a 33.3% effective field goal rate, 22nd-best nationally, and made just 29.3% of its twos, 16th. Mason also kept UMBC off the line, allowing a free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) of 9.7%, third in the country. That matters against a Kansas City team that already struggles to get there: the Roos' free throw rate at Creighton ranked 292nd.
Mason's own offense was uneven, with a 47.8% effective field goal rate, but it protected the ball, turning over 13.9% of its possessions, 72nd nationally.
Second chances and size
The possession battle tilts further on the glass. Mason grabbed 40.5% of its own misses against UMBC, 74th nationally, with Emmanuel Kanga pulling down 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. Kansas City rebounded just 17.9% of its misses at Creighton, 290th.
Mason also plays bigger, with a minutes-weighted average height of 78.1 inches against Kansas City's 77.1. Combine extra offensive boards with Kansas City's turnovers and the Roos could be fighting a steady shortfall in shots, the same slow squeeze Creighton applied after halftime.
Who is available for Mason
Makhai Valentine, a transfer from Northern Illinois, missed the Oct. 17 exhibition against Villanova and sat out another exhibition on Oct. 25 before returning against St. Mary's (MD) in late October. He came off the bench in the opener and scored 12 points in 23 minutes.
Baylor transfer center James Nnaji is still waiting on eligibility clearance for this season, and no ruling has surfaced. Guard Lilian Marville was listed inactive for an exhibition with no reason given, and his status for this game is unclear. Kansas City reported no absences from its opener.
What to watch
- Kansas City's turnover count in the first 10 minutes. Smith carried a 36.3% usage rate at Creighton; how he handles Mason's guards sets the tone.
- Daughtery's jumper. He went 1-of-6 from three in the opener after shooting 42% from deep at UC Davis last season.
- Baraka Okojie's shot. The Mercer transfer averaged 19.7 points last season but shot 20% in the opener while handing out 5 assists.
- Tempo. Mason played at a pace ranked 330th last season; both teams logged 71.5 possessions per 40 minutes in their openers. A slower game shrinks Kansas City's margin for error less than its turnovers do.
- Neutral floor. The game tips Thursday at 3 p.m. ET at Eckerd College's McArthur Center, and both teams come in with 10 days of rest.

Numbers that matter
| Kansas City turnover rate | 30.6% | Ranked 293rd of 303 in the opener, the clearest reason a halftime lead at Creighton evaporated. |
|---|---|---|
| Mason opponent eFG% | 33.3% | UMBC's shooting against Mason ranked 22nd-best nationally. |
| Mason offensive rebound rate | 40.5% | Against a Kansas City team that rebounded 17.9% of its own misses at Creighton. |
| Kansas City returning minutes | 0.0% | Last season's 4-27 team tells you almost nothing about Turgeon's rebuilt roster. |
| Kansas City second half at Creighton | 43-22 | Creighton's margin over the final 20 minutes after trailing 39-33 at the break. |
