Jarvis Christian vs Grambling prediction: Grambling's turnover-hunting defense opens at home against Jarvis Christian

Before a trip to No. 4 Texas, a rebuilt Grambling roster gets a home tune-up against a non-Division I visitor, and last season's ball-hawking defense is the trait to watch.

Quick take
  • Grambling opens at home against a non-Division I opponent, and last season's defense was built on creating extra possessions.
  • Grambling's pressure: last season the Tigers forced turnovers at the 4th-highest rate in Division I.
  • No spread or total has been posted. Last season's 64.4 possessions per 40 minutes, 328th, points to a slow game.

Pressure is the identity

Grambling's clearest strength last season was taking the ball away. The Tigers forced turnovers on 23.0% of opponent possessions, 4th of 365 Division I teams, and their steal rate ranked 25th. Against a visitor we hold no data on, that pressure is the trait to watch early.

The same team was also careless with the ball. Grambling's own turnover rate (giveaways per 100 possessions) of 22.7% ranked 363rd, nearly last in the country. A home opener against weaker competition is a chance to see whether the new backcourt has fixed that habit before the schedule gets harder.

Slow tempo, lots of free throws

Last season Grambling played at 64.4 possessions per 40 minutes, 328th nationally. Few teams played slower. It made up some of that through contact. Its free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 41.0% ranked 38th.

The shooting was the weak spot. Grambling's 31.8% from three ranked 300th. Volume at the line and extra possessions from steals carried an offense that struggled to make shots.

A new roster and a big trip ahead

Read last season's numbers with caution. The 14-19 team has been reshaped. The roster lists newcomers from Southern, NIU, LIU, NC A&T, Eastern Illinois and Kilgore CC, plus freshmen Colin Byrd and Imoh Erims. Patrick Crarey II's group was picked eighth in the 12-team SWAC preseason poll.

The date is set but the tip time is still TBA. Grambling's next game, on Nov. 9, is at No. 4 Texas. The Tigers have handled this opponent before, winning 105-68 in 2018 and 71-44 in 2021. No injury or eligibility news had surfaced for either team as of Oct. 23.

Numbers that matter

Forced turnover rate, last season4thGrambling's 23.0% ranked among the best in Division I and is its most reliable edge over a non-Division I visitor.
Own turnover rate, last season363rdGrambling gave the ball away on 22.7% of possessions, a flaw the rebuilt backcourt has to address.
Pace, last season64.4Possessions per 40 minutes, 328th nationally, which suggests a slow game.
Free throw rate, last season41.0%Ranked 38th, so Grambling's offense leaned heavily on getting to the line.
