Hampton Pirates vs GW Revolutionaries prediction: Hampton's new-look offense needs a rescue against GW's swarming guards
After a 15-point first half at Georgia Tech, a nearly rebuilt Hampton roster walks into a Smith Center where George Washington just smothered Navy by 52.
| Spread | George Washington -19 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 147 |
- GW's guards should control tempo and turnovers early; Hampton's only path is a far cleaner offensive night than its 75-55 loss at Georgia Tech.
- Hampton's transfer guards against GW's ball pressure: the Pirates must beat a defense that forced turnovers at a 27.1% rate in its opener.
- GW moved from -16.5 to -19 in our feed, and the total rose to 147.5, even though both teams went under in their openers.
A half Hampton wants back
Both rosters were rebuilt from the studs. George Washington returns just 12.2% of last season's minutes and Hampton 15.4%, so last season's team numbers say little and one week of games says almost everything anyone knows.
For Hampton, that week was rough. The Pirates trailed Georgia Tech 42-15 at halftime on Nov. 3. Their effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark where threes count 1.5 times) sits 361st of 363 in Division I. Seth Hubbard, the Milwaukee transfer who led the team with nine points, needed 3-of-13 shooting to get there.
The talent suggests better is coming. Hubbard averaged 16.6 points in nine games at Milwaukee last season. Max Frazier shot 65.8% for Central Connecticut last season and went 2-of-9 in his debut. Ivan Thomas needs those transfers to look like themselves, and fast.
GW lets it fly
Chris Caputo's fourth GW team opened with a 91-39 rout of Navy in which 10 players scored. The Revolutionaries made 51.9% of their threes, fifth in the country, and Colorado transfer Felix Kossaras hit 4 of 6 off the bench.
Hampton's perimeter defense looked sharp at Georgia Tech, holding the Yellow Jackets to 14.3% from deep. The catch is what happened inside: Georgia Tech made 61.5% of its twos. A team that defends the arc but folds at the rim gives GW's guards two ways to win the possession, by kicking out or driving.
The one note of caution for GW came in preseason. Jean Aranguren, the lone real returner, took a head blow in the Oct. 16 exhibition loss to Georgetown. He was back for the opener, running the offense with five assists.
Extra possessions for GW
GW's defense is built to take the ball away. It forced turnovers on 27.1% of Navy's possessions, 39th nationally, and Dylan James and Andrew Phillips combined for seven steals.
Hampton's bigger problem may be the glass. The Pirates' defensive rebound rate (the share of opponent misses they secure) is 349th in the country after Georgia Tech kept second-chance possessions alive. If GW wins the turnover battle and the boards, a lopsided margin follows quickly. The Pirates do get to the foul line often, but that only helps a team that converts there.
A big number that keeps growing
Ten books are quoting GW as a 19-point favorite, up from -16.5 when our feed first saw the game, with the total moving from 145.5 to 147.5. The money is betting on a blowout and on points.
The openers argue for caution on the second part. GW covered as an 18.5-point favorite against Navy, but that game went under, and so did Hampton's at Georgia Tech. Last season's final adjusted ratings, a weak guide given the turnover, had GW 79th and Hampton 272nd in net efficiency.
The last meeting, in November 2024, ended in a GW rout at home. The question for this one is less who wins than whether Hampton's guards can keep the second half from turning into garbage time.
