Georgia vs North Carolina prediction: North Carolina's rebuilt roster gets its first real test from Georgia

Michael Malone's Tar Heels return 17% of last season's minutes, and Georgia's turnover-hungry defense will find out quickly how well the new pieces fit.

Quick take
  • Expect a ragged, fast early-season game: Georgia wants chaos and transition, North Carolina wants threes and free throws from a rebuilt backcourt.
  • Georgia's ball pressure against North Carolina's new guards, led by Terrence Brown, who went 3 of 11 in the opener.
  • No line yet. Both teams failed to cover as home favorites in their openers, Georgia at -40 against North Carolina Central.

A new team in old colors

North Carolina opened its first season under Michael Malone with a roster that barely resembles last year's. The Tar Heels return just 17.0% of last season's minutes, with five returners and 11 newcomers. Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar are gone, and Jarin Stevenson is the only returner who played real minutes. Last season's final adjusted net rating, points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, put UNC 27th nationally, but that number describes a team that no longer exists.

Georgia has more continuity. Mike White, in his fifth season, kept 44.2% of last season's minutes, including Blue Cain, Marcus "Smurf" Millender and Kanon Catchings. The Bulldogs finished 31st in last season's adjusted net rating. They were picked 11th in the SEC anyway, a sign that few outside Athens expect them to be that good again.

The programs have played 18 times, but this is the first meeting this century. UNC leads the series 13-5. It is the first half of a home-and-home that returns to Chapel Hill in 2028.

Threes, free throws and pressure

North Carolina's opener showed a clear plan. More than half its shots came from deep, a 3-point attempt rate of 54.5% that ranks 29th. The Tar Heels made just 30.0% of them against Western Carolina. They also lived at the line, with a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) that ranks 21st.

Georgia's defense took that second weapon away in its opener. It held North Carolina Central to an opponent free throw rate of 16.4%, 29th nationally, and to 34.8% shooting on twos. If UNC's guards can't draw fouls, the game rides on whether those threes fall.

Georgia's own shooting was the problem against NC Central. The Bulldogs made 23.1% of their threes, 295th in the country. Help should come from Brady Dunlap, who shot 45.1% from deep at Saint Louis last season before a 1-of-5 debut.

Where possessions get won

This is the matchup to watch. Georgia forced turnovers on 25.7% of NC Central's possessions, 63rd nationally, and posted a steal rate that ranks 42nd. Penn State transfer Freddie Dilione V had four steals in the opener despite a rough shooting night.

North Carolina protected the ball well against Western Carolina, turning it over on 12.9% of possessions, 53rd nationally. But its defense created almost nothing, ranking 310th in forced turnover rate. That pattern held over from last season, when UNC ranked 352nd in that stat. If Georgia wins the turnover battle by a wide margin, the Bulldogs can survive more cold shooting.

Size could tilt the glass the other way. UNC's minutes-weighted height is 79.2 inches to Georgia's 78.0. Georgia also lost shot-blocker Somto Cyril and will lean on transfers James Scott and Andrew Osasuyi inside.

Tempo and the opening lines

Georgia played fast last season, ranking 11th in pace with 72.7 possessions per 40 minutes. It ran at 74 in the opener. North Carolina sat at 69.5 against Western Carolina, a more deliberate rhythm, so the team that controls pace gains an edge.

Both openers left the market unimpressed. Georgia closed at -40 against North Carolina Central, ranked 346th in adjusted net rating, and won by 16. UNC closed at -22.25 and won 80-72. Both games went under, and both teams went 0-1 against the spread. Both teams also get 11 days of rest before this tip.

Who is available

Georgia sophomore forward Kareem Stagg missed a game with what a team spokesman called a slight hip injury and was a game-time decision for the opener, and his latest status is unconfirmed. Freshman Donovan Williams Jr. missed a preseason game with an illness but was practicing fully again, White said.

For North Carolina, Matt Able missed the Charlotte exhibition with an unspecified injury, then led the team in scoring in the opener. Isaiah Denis sat out the Indiana exhibition with a minor injury. Freshman Sayon Keita was cleared as eligible in August and started the opener.

Key players

  • Freddie Dilione V (Georgia): Grabbed four steals in his debut after averaging 14.0 points at Penn State last season.
  • Matt Able (North Carolina): Scored 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting in the opener after missing an exhibition.
