Georgia State vs Charlotte prediction: Two new coaches, one question: can Georgia State make a shot?
Charlotte opens a new era at Halton Arena against a Georgia State team that couldn't score last season, though both rosters are mostly unknown.
- Charlotte's shotmaking last season dwarfed Georgia State's. If any of that carries over to new staffs, the 49ers should control a slow game at home.
- Georgia State's interior scoring against Charlotte's defense: the Panthers ranked 365th of 365 in 2-point shooting last season.
- No spread or total is posted yet. Charlotte's 64.1 pace last season, 339th, points to a low-possession game if style holds.
Two programs, two fresh starts
Neither bench will look familiar on Nov. 5. Charlotte fired Aaron Fearne in March after he went 47-51 in three seasons, a run that ended 17-17 with an 86-64 loss to South Florida in the American tournament semifinals. Former Cincinnati coach Wes Miller is listed as his replacement.
Georgia State went outside the box too, hiring Atlanta native Jon Cremins in April. He is the nephew of Bobby Cremins and worked as his assistant at Charleston. The Panthers finished 10-22 last season.
That matters for every number below. With two new staffs and no confirmed rotations, last season's profiles describe programs, not necessarily the players who take the floor. Treat them as a starting point, not a forecast.
Georgia State's shooting problem
The gap that defined these teams last season was simple: one could shoot, one couldn't. Georgia State posted an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 45.2%, which ranked 362nd nationally. Its 2-point shooting, at 43.3%, was dead last in Division I.
Charlotte sat on the other end of the scale. The 49ers' 53.5% effective field goal mark ranked 98th, and they made 54.4% of their twos.
The adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) told the same story by season's end. Georgia State's offense ranked 330th, and its net rating ranked 303rd. Charlotte finished 179th in net rating, a middling team rather than a good one, but one tier above. Charlotte has also won both recent meetings, 65-57 at home in 2023 and 77-63 in Atlanta in 2024.
Possessions won and lost
Charlotte's flaw last season was the ball. The 49ers turned it over on 18.3% of possessions, 277th, and forced turnovers at a 13.8% clip that ranked 348th. They rarely took it away and often gave it up.
Georgia State was steadier, with a turnover rate that ranked 114th. That is the Panthers' clearest path to staying close: protect the ball and steal a few extra shots.
The glass cut the other way. Charlotte grabbed 34.2% of its own misses, 72nd nationally, while Georgia State's defensive rebounding ranked 297th. Second chances could offset whatever the 49ers give away.
A slow floor and a sharp stroke
Tempo is the other style question. Charlotte played at 64.1 possessions per 40 minutes, one of the slowest paces in the country. Georgia State ran faster, ranking 119th. A new coach can change pace overnight, so this is the first thing to watch in each team's opener.
If the game tightens late, the line favors the visitors. Georgia State made 78.4% of its free throws last season, 11th in Division I, while Charlotte shot 71.6%, which ranked 218th. Both teams got to the line at similar rates.
Numbers that matter
| Georgia State 2-point % (last season) | 43.3% | Ranked 365th of 365, the root of a Panthers offense that finished 330th in adjusted efficiency. |
|---|---|---|
| Charlotte effective FG% (last season) | 53.5% | Ranked 98th, the 49ers' biggest edge in this matchup if the shooting carries over under Wes Miller. |
| Charlotte turnover rate (last season) | 18.3% | Ranked 277th, the main way Charlotte let weaker opponents hang around. |
| Charlotte pace (last season) | 64.1 | Possessions per 40 minutes ranked 339th, pointing to a low-possession game if the style survives the coaching change. |
| Georgia State free throw % (last season) | 78.4% | Ranked 11th nationally, a real asset if the game is close late. |
