Georgia Southern vs UCF prediction: Dior Johnson's scoring binge faces Georgia Southern's stingy opening act
UCF rebuilt around a 41-point guard and a transfer class, and Georgia Southern arrives in Orlando after holding its opener to 55 points.
- UCF's offense should create the edge, but a rebuilt defense that allowed 95 in its opener keeps Georgia Southern within reach.
- Dior Johnson against a Georgia Southern defense that held Ball State to 31.4% effective field goal shooting.
- No line is posted yet. UCF failed to cover -22.5 in its opener, while Georgia Southern covered as a 1.75-point underdog.
Johnson leads a new UCF
Johnny Dawkins has almost a new team. Players on this season's roster played just 17.8% of UCF's minutes last season, so the Knights' 2025-26 profile tells you little about who will take the floor Friday. What matters is who arrived, and one arrival has already taken over.
Dior Johnson, back in Orlando after a season at Tarleton State, scored 41 points in the overtime win over Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 2. He made 13 of 15 shots and all four of his threes, then scored 10 points in overtime alone. That wasn't a fluke of role: he averaged 24.0 points at Tarleton State last season with a usage rate of 37.9%, meaning he finished more than a third of his team's possessions.
The help is mostly new too. Lewis Walker, who averaged 18.9 points at North Carolina A&T last season, added 16 off the bench. Arturo Dean filled the box with 15 points and 3 steals. Riley Kugel, a starter last season, was projected to start the opener and officially rejoined the roster after the first exhibition, but he isn't among UCF's six leading minute-getters from that game, and the program hasn't explained his status.
An Eagles defense worth testing
Georgia Southern's turnover is even steeper: returning players logged only 13.2% of last season's minutes after an 11-player roster revamp. Charlie Henry's new group opened by beating Ball State 67-55, and the defense carried it. The Cardinals managed an effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure where threes count 1.5 times) of 31.4%, 14th nationally, and made just 13.5% of their threes.
Treat that with care. Ball State ranked 295th in last season's adjusted net rating, and it fired away from deep, with 62.7% of its shots coming from three. Some of that was Georgia Southern's pressure. Some of it was a weak opponent missing open looks. UCF shot 50.0% from three in its opener and took threes on only 31.0% of its shots, so the Knights are more likely to attack inside, where Georgia Southern blocked 18.2% of opponent two-point tries.
The Eagles' own offense is the worry. They posted an effective field goal percentage of 42.5%, 287th, and hit 26.3% of their threes. Eltramon Smith carried them with 24 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Truman Claytor IV played 33 minutes and went 1 of 8.
Both teams live at the line
The two openers shared one trait. Georgia Southern's free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 67.9%, 11th nationally, and UCF's was 65.5%, 17th. Neither defense kept opponents off the line either, with both allowing free throw rates near 42%.
That sets up a whistle-heavy game, and the shooting at the stripe has been rough. Georgia Southern made 61.1% of its free throws and UCF made 65.8%. In a game that stays close late, the team that converts those trips could decide it. UCF also gave up 95 points to an FGCU team that ranked 243rd in last season's adjusted net rating, so Georgia Southern's limited offense may find more room than Ball State gave it.
Schedule and the market
The Eagles visit Orlando for the first time since 2018, and they won't come in fresh: they play at Georgia Tech on Nov. 6 before making the trip. UCF's last game was the Nov. 2 opener, and it's playing at home at Addition Financial Arena.
Last season's final adjusted ratings frame the gap. UCF finished 58th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), Georgia Southern 233rd. With rosters this new, those ratings describe programs more than these lineups.
No spread or total has been posted. The openers offer hints. UCF was a 22.5-point favorite against FGCU and won by one, a game that went over its total of 153.5. Georgia Southern won outright as a 1.75-point underdog, and that game stayed well under a 161.25 total. Expect the market to favor UCF's talent while its defense remains an open question.
