Fort Valley State vs Florida A&M prediction: Florida A&M's turnover chaos gets a home-opener test against Fort Valley State

The Rattlers forced turnovers like a top-20 team last season and gave them away like almost nobody else, and Division II Fort Valley State arrives as the first home audience for that two-way mess.

Quick take
  • Florida A&M should control a Division II visitor at home, but last season's sloppiness can keep the margin smaller than the talent gap suggests.
  • Florida A&M's ball pressure, which forced turnovers at a top-20 rate last season, is the thing to watch against Fort Valley State.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season's 23.1% turnover rate, 364th of 365, is the number that bears on any line.

A home opener with an asterisk

Florida A&M lists Thursday's game against Fort Valley State as its regular-season home opener at the Al Lawson Center. Fort Valley State's own schedule calls it an exhibition, so the game's status is unsettled. Either way, it follows the Rattlers' Monday opener against Florida State in Tampa, and it gives Charlie Ward, entering his second season after being hired in April 2025, a first look at a reshaped roster in front of the home crowd.

The programs have met before: Florida A&M beat the Division II Wildcats 80-58 in a previous meeting.

Steals on one end, giveaways on the other

Last season's Rattlers lived in the turnover column on both ends. Their defense forced turnovers on 20.9% of opponent possessions, 20th of 365 Division I teams, and their steal rate ranked 29th. Their offense coughed it up on 23.1% of trips, 364th of 365.

That volatility came with a 15-16 record last season. It also explains last season's final adjusted offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) of 95.1, which ranked 351st. Against a Division II opponent, the pressure should travel. Whether the new backcourt protects the ball is the real question.

New faces carry the load

Florida A&M's roster adds transfers Jaquan Sanders (Hofstra), Daisean Williford (Oregon State) and Jaden Kempson (UAlbany), plus freshmen including Jacobi Hall and Jayden Joseph. With starting roles unconfirmed and returning minutes unknown, last season's team numbers are a loose guide. No injuries were listed for the Rattlers as of Oct. 19.

Fort Valley State, coached by Brandon Britt, brought forwards Amari Floyd and Amari Davis to SIAC Media Day. One habit worth watching: last season Florida A&M allowed a free throw rate of 40.2%, 312th nationally, and fouling would hand the visitors free points. Expect a slow game, too; the Rattlers' pace ranked 295th last season.
